The next Chester!

St. Petersburg Times writer Rick Stroud reported on ESPN's First Take that the Lions will look to trade Shaun Rogers. The Detroit Free Press has confirmed via a source that Rogers will not be brought back in 2008. Rogers can be a dominant force inside, but the Lions are clearly frustrated by his failure to stay consistently productive and in shape. If the Lions can't deal him, Rogers is expected to be released. Detroit should be able to get a first-day pick for the 28-year-old, but probably not a first-rounder. Not a bad move for us. Blocked kicks result in good field position.

Why would a team trade a first day pick if they are going to cut him?

I think that, if it's a trade deal, he comes with 500 cartons of Little Debbie snack cakes.

Doesn't the waiver wire only happen during the season??? Thought he would become a UFA if cut during the offseason?? |

Dude's pretty good though, I hate the idea of simply throwing bodies at the problem but I suppose if we had to sign a free agent or available DT he would be fine to look at but he better have a good work out for us.
Edit: to clarify, no way I would give away a first day pick for him.

His tackle numbers do go up and down a lot but he is pretty consistent with sack numbers, except for 2006 - I don't recall if he was injured or not then?

That's what I thought. Why give up a first day pick if you can sign him. I don't see a huge bidding war for him, and IMO a first day pick is more valuable than the risk of losing him in a bidding war.
