Sayers was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFL and the Bears in the NFL (fourth overall pick, immediately after Chicago selected another All-American, linebacker Dick Butkus). Despite a more lucrative offer from the Chiefs, Sayers chose the Bears, even though he described their counter-offer as "$4.95 and a carton of Cokes."

I'm happy with the results of the ball carrier on "65 Toss Power Trap," thank you very much. I'm not happy with the results since the team's last 13-3 team's playoff loss.

I was doing some searching for the all time #1 draft picks by the Chiefs, and Gale Sayers name pops up.
Anywhooo, anyone know the reason he DIDN'T sign with the Chiefs? |

I'd never thought about this. Imagine what would be different:
1. The Chiefs would've been viewed as an all-time NFL dynasty with at least two of the first four Super Bowl wins (and possibly more). 2. Vince Lombardi and the Packers would still be famous, but more in the way of the old Browns of the 1950s than in comparison to modern teams. Teams who won their championships prior to the Super Bowl tend to be somewhat underappreciated. 3. Sayers would possibly have not blown out his knee, and would've been playing well into the early 70s, breaking records along the way. 4. Joe Namath would be remembered similar to George Blanda or Jack Kemp or something - just another throw-happy quarterback. 5. Otis Taylor, Jim Tyrer, Ed Budde, and Johnny Robinson would be in the Hall of Fame.

Wow, considering most of our team was black, that is surprising. Especially since he would have been so close to Lawrence KS. Dammit Gale...

He didnt sign with the Chiefs bc of the racism in Kansas City at that time. Chicago was better for African-Americans at the time.

We lost SB1 by 4 TD's. Sayers wouldn't have made that much difference. The Pack dominated the 2nd half.

if the racism was so bad, why did so many players stay, even after their careers were over?
I don't buy it. |

When I saw this thread, I thought, "Didn't the Packers blow the Chiefs out? How was Gale Sayers going to stop the Green Bay offense?"
But I wanted to be sure, so I checked the Wiki for Super Bowl I. ... and look at what I found: Bart Starr threw a pass to reserve receiver Max McGee, who had replaced injured starter Boyd Dowler earlier in the drive. McGee slipped past Butt-Pirates cornerback Willie Mitchell, made a one-handed catch at the 23-yard line, and then took off for a 37-yard touchdown reception. On their ensuing drive, the Butt-Pirates moved the ball to Green Bay's 33-yard line, but kicker Mike Mercer missed a 4-yard field goal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_I Looks like there is at least one Raiders fan who knows how to hack. |
