Dark Sector PS3/Xbox video game question

Alright I bought this game off the bargain bin for $4.00. Actually it isnt that bad.

Although the instruction book that came with it might as well have not even been printed. It gives you absolutely no info other than button layout.

Anyway one thing I cant quite figure out now is the picking up of weapons. It is pretty standard as you stand over top of the weapon and hit the button and then you have upgraded from the pistol to a shotgun or machine gun. The thing that is rather strange and aggravating about this is it appears you can only hold the new weapon for about 10 seconds and a small beeping is heard in the game and then your weapon is discarded and your back to the original pistol.

It pretty much makes it useless to upgrade to the bigger weapons.

I was hoping that I am just missing something here, and I am supposed to be doing something to keep the weapon. Please Help. I am really enjoying this game if it wasnt for this issue. I have googled and found no answers.
