Honestly, it might be time. $4M to void seems like a lot - In fact, when one considers that he was an aging player that signed a new deal last year, ya gotta wonder why it cost that much? How much would it have cost to have kept him signed? Is this part of the process of signing another 1 one-year-deal? I don't know much about his contract.

So if he just would've retired instead, would that have affected our cap the same, more, or less? I've always wondered how it works when a player hangs them up.

Jesus Christ guys, the contract was set up this way when he signed it.
He had no salary in the final years, the cap hit is due to his signing bonus... |

Honestly I don't recall him making very many plays this year. He's old and getting slow. He has been solid, a great citizen and great chief but honestly it's probably a good business decision to let him go.

We have signed none of our guys and time almost up. This may be a disaster on Dorsey's end. DJ and Howard should stay.

He's 32. He's not Methulselah for crying out loud.
Dude plays hard as shit and still brings it. He has to be accounted for off the edge. They team is not going to let him go. He's too valuable to the system and the continuity of the team/defense. Besides, Ford isn't better than him. (Younger doesn't mean better folks.) He also keeps himself in phenomenal shape during the off-season. Old and slow? Jesus... |

Dorsey is most likely going to let them test the open market and see what their value is and then bring them back for a reasonable rate versus give them an overly inflated contract based on "experience in the system." I think it's a good move by Dorsey. If he gave them a contract early, guys like DeVito, Johnson and Hali would have likely been overpaid by the team. Howard definitely would have, especially if the CP brain trust was handing out contracts. |

I think this means his time here is all but done...
If you were going to bring him back, you would have gotten this deal done before this cap hit. It's a sad thought to consider, but it seems likely reality IMO. Dee Ford's time may finally be here. We really need to get an extension done with Berry and fix our cap space situation. |
