Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun 2 is out and in theaters and is quite popular at the box office. I havent been to an actual movie at an actual cinema since even a few years before COVID, but this one is the one that has me making plans for a return.

I've not yet seen it. But surely many of you have? A thread must be made!

I listened to a Critical Drinker podcast about this movie and jotted down some quotes:

Guest: "Lunatics just seemed to fade away into the background and this movie has made 1.2 billion so far. I feel like adults are back in charge."

Drinker: "I loved it and I came out of the theatre feeling great and I want all people to experience that first of all, because I think it will be good for...people's outlook on life"

Drinker: "It's this classic idea of the hero you used to love, he's back, he's older but he's still vital, he's still interesting and still capable of doing stuff. He doesnt have to be deconstructed, doesnt have to go through a postmodernist nightmare. That can still work! Thats what people want!"

Proper link to all that when I get to my desktop. But this film sounds great and I intend to see it ASAP. Anyone already see it? Thoughts?

I should have known better. I'm stuck on my cell phone and only looked through the first page of the Media Center for the topic.

If mods want to delete this thread and perhaps merge my OP into the original as a comment, that would be fine. I doubt I'm allowed to full on delete threads on my own, and certainly not on my pay-as-you-go cheapo phone.

I put in work on this OP just to find out it was a misfire.

I wrote down what was said in that podcast and then transcribed it here from those notes. I'm pretty good at writing down what people say in real time because at one time in my youth, I covered baseball and had to write down quotes from players and coaches to use in articles later on. This was before everyone had smart phones with voice recorder apps.

Well, you didn't put in the work to do a simple search on this forum for TOP GUN MAVERICK.

Well all that aside, did you enjoy the film? How many stars out of 4 would ya give it Mr. Srvy?

ETA: I also have an out here. That thread was about the trailer. This thread is about the finished theatrical release, clearly deserving of its own thread!

I saw it about 2 weeks ago with my wife and family. It was entertaining and the wife and kids were all in. Basically, it was a rehash of the first, and the ending was dumb but I was entertained.

A fair and honest review I thank you for that. I will certainly still watch it soon but I was low-key wondering if the hype I'm seeing might be a touch overblown. Sounds like it is well worth the price of admission at any rate.

I want to see entertainment for my entertainment buck, as opposed to a sermon, and it sounds like it delivers there.

Saw it with wife and kids at a movie theater. First movie in a long time that legitimately belongs on the big screen. Acting, effects, story were better than the original. Not a "great film" but a good summer flick.

In the land of CGI, flat characters, and social messages....the short man with live action sequences, heroic story arc, and fun is King.

just rewatched Maverick last weekend.

Man, I think I said some dumb things about the movie right after I watched it the first time. What a great movie. I think it might be the best movie in decades. i think I originally said something about how I thought it was just a rehash of the first movie, but really it was a next chapter, not a remake.

As such, the story was pretty darned good, enabling them to bring in the right amount of nostalgia, without being just a parade of cameo appearances that most blockbuster sequels seem to revel in. Each character brought back was actually integral to telling the story.

I could wax rhapsodic for hours about the visual effects, cinematography, etc., at least as much as an amateur like myself could try to, but the main point is that Maverick was a great piece of story-telling in the best old school block-buster fashion renovated perfectly for today and i loved every second of it.

I thought it was entertaining.

But, I don't think you can just fly right between 2 jets like they were doing and talking all that shit over their radio doesn't happen.

But other than that, I thought it was entertaining and I'm nitpicking.

There are a shitload of videos out there with fighter pilots talking about what’s real and what’s not.

I didn’t watch any of them. I don’t care. That was a hell of a movie.

Well, no, they'd never allow that kind of maneuvering at TG. There's several things in the movie that they'd never allow at TG in reality, but who cares. Made for a great scene.
