What to do What to do? (A Work Question)

As a fundraiser I send my days raising money for my clients, and building friendships with wealthy people. It’s a great gig, its like I live two different lifestyles. Anyway I have great political connections, and sometimes for the right donor I can help them out. They see it as me going out of my way for them, I see it as buttering them up for the next time I need a contribution from them.

So I helped this guy out recently and to thank me he says “Hey, I have a time share that can be used at any Ritz Carlton, why don’t you and your wife use it since you always help me out” I say, no its no problem, I just like helping out…. The he says “Well just let me know when you want to use it, its not big deal”

So I go tell my wife and she says “Hell yes you use it” I think she wants to go on a really nice vacation after she is finished taking the Bar Exam. I tell her why I don’t want to use it and she thinks I’m crazy.

What do you guys think? If I use it will I lose my ability to ask him for contributions to my clients?

Did he offer it as a thank you, or as a string to pull on at a later date?

As for it affecting your relationship, you aren't through helping him are you? I don't see how it would affect your relationship. Now, maybe it might influence a donation that you may get from him for someone else in the near future, but if you keep working for/with him, there will be more opportunities down the road. So no, I wouldn't see it as affecting your ability to ask him for donations down the road.

Also, I've had this happen with churches, it could be viewed as an insult (or at least hurt his feelings) to not take him up on an offer like that.

After answerng the first question, if it is a thank you, I'd take him up on it with a clear conscience.

Nah dude. That's the way things work at that level. IMO I have no personal experience with it.

Just to be clear. He is not a client. He is a mojor donor in my state. I don't think I would have any problem asking him for $$$, I just don't want him to call me after using this and saying "Hoover, I want you to do x,y, and z" then I feel like I have to.

That's something you'll have to decide. Like I mentioned, if you feel there are no strings attached, go for it. However, if there are strings attached, or you feel that there might be strings attached down the road, talk to him about it. If there are indeed strings, and they are going to get you commited to something down the road you're not comfortable with, decline.

I have in the past, when gifts have been offered, accepted them, but made it clear that I viewed them as an expression of thanksgiving for what has already happened, and the gifts won't affect future events. Never had a problem, but at least by saying this, IF they try to use it as leverage down the road, you can remind them of what was said.

The Ritz-Carlton, Bali was not affected in any way by the tragic earthquake, and resultant tsunamis which have occurred in many countries in Southeast Asia. Although the quake was centered off Sumatra, which is 2,500 kilometer from the island of Bali. The resort did not feel the earthquake, and continues to operate normally with no guest services disrupted. Those planning upcoming trips to the resort should not be concerned.

I say stay in the hotel - and trash it good before you leave and then you'll know for sure if it affected your relationship.
