The Fishing Planet

I used to fish quite a bit while I was growing up in KC. But, it all stopped right around high school- as well as my hunting trips.

Anyways, I've pretty much hiked everywhere in Colorado and this summer I want to pick up a new outdoors sports- and one of them I'm considering- is getting back into fishing.

So, what I'd like to hear from those of you who fish- what's the best way to get started? What type of fishing do you enjoy most? Anyone ever fish in Colorado? What are your favorite lures? Favorite uses for bait? Etc., etc....

If you're in Colorado, you need to buy yourself a fly rod and get with the program. You lucky bastards have more trout streams than you could possibly ever fish.

any kind of fishing's fine w/me. i have a pond stocked w/catfish i've been feeding 10 years. plenty of bass fishing around these parts too. i use a fly-rod every once in awhile, but not enough to be any good.

i did release a corn-eyed brown trout into the wild this morning.

I'm a big fan of fly fishing -- used to go to Bennet the week after opening weekend (since opening weekend was so crowded, it was best to wait until most folks left).

I usually use some sort of streamer or nymph, as they seem quite effective. I used to tie my own while in high school, but it's been a long, long time since I've done that. I just can't wait until my son gets older and I can teach him.

I say start with white-trash fisihing: get a Zebco reel, some plastic (or even real) worms, a 12-pack of your favorite beer, and just sit on the bank and fish all night.

Then you can graduate to the bigger stuff.

Yep...Fly fishing is actually something I'm seriously considering, but I hear it takes quite a bit of patience in perfecting the technique.

It does, but once you get it down (well, almost down -- I'm not sure anyone truly perfects it) it's almost Zen-like.

You can even practice in your yard: bust out a small dish of some sort, put it, oh, say 10 - 20 feet away, then try to get the fly to land--softly--on it.

Damn ... all this typing and reading about it is getting me in the mood to bust out my waders and make a road trip down south.

Colorado fishing is good, but it's also crowded (like everything in Colorado). The good thing about it is that you can get into the backcountry and find some remote waters with fewer people, but anything within an hour or two of Denver is going to be nuts.

You have some great fly shops in the area, if you're thinking of getting into fly fishing. I highly recommend Charlie Craven's shop, Charlie's Flybox, in Arvada. He's a heckuva an angler, flytier, and a major authority on the Rocky Mountains.

You've got a lot of options in your area, though. The resevoirs around there house everything from trout to pike to salmon to walleye. There are also some excellent carp waters in and around Denver.

Fishing is good for the soul.

They've pretty much ruined Bennett for me. It's crowded all the time. The only time I even consider going anymore is through the week, or late in the season.

You can pick up the basics fairly quickly. My fly cast is ugly as hell, but I never practice it or anything. If you can heave it out in the middle of the river, you'll usually be ok. Just be ready to embarass yourself in the beginning. There will be more than one occasion where you wrap your self around a tree.

We were just north of the Springs last year, and barely saw another soul the whole time we were out there. 11-mile canyon is where we spent probably half of our time.

Yeah, it's just too damned busy during the weekends and pretty much the first week of the season.

There are still a few spots you can get some peace, but not many.

Sadly, there sure aren't a lot of place in MO to do some serious fly fishing. Bass, catfish, etc., yes. But if one wants to fish in peace and quiet, CO and MT are definitely the places to live.

That's pretty amazing that you were in 11-mile and didn't see people. It's fairly notorious for combat fishing.

I know, it really sucks. The best place that's even remotely close is northern Arkansas. But I haven't been down there for years.
