Warfield = One of NFL's Most Overpaid

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5002168

6. CB Eric Warfield, Kansas City Chiefs
2004 salary: $2.5M base, $0 signing bonus, $3.0M total, $3.7M cap value
2005 base salary: $3.3M

In 2002, the Chiefs signed Warfield to a seven-year contract worth $27 million, including a $5 million signing bonus. Since then, the Chiefs' secondary has annually been one of the league's worst teams when it comes to giving up yardage to opposing No. 1 receivers. The fact that defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham prefers to leave his cornerbacks in man coverage certainly doesn't play to Warfield's strengths. But that hasn't been a problem so far in 2005 because of Warfield's four-game suspension for a DUI conviction.

Warfield's base salary makes him the fifth-highest-paid cornerback in the league this season, which sounds a tad high for someone who could end up as the dime back. And just in case you need more proof that Warfield is overpaid, consider this: While under house arrest for a previous DUI conviction in 2001, his Martha Stewart-inspired tracking bracelet would occasionally go off when he strayed too far down one of the wings in his mansion.

Ohplease, this coming from a fan of the team that pays Champ Bailey to get abused like a 10 year old altar boy.

Warfield's side of the field was locked down pretty good last year. he doesn't get paid while he's suspended, so he's not cost us a thing so far this year.

Wow, I knew he earned too much but had no idea it was that bad.

So Warfield has one decent year during an eight year career full of mediocre to subpar play.

Bailey already won a game singlehandedly for the Broncos. Warfield has yet to suit up.

Warfield is overpaid. You're right about that. Hindsight is 20/20 of course and if you examine the corner marker that year the Chiefs really had nothing else to go on. They looked at FA decided that Warfield was the best option and had the most upside. It doesn't change the fact he is overpaid but under the circumstances the FO thought it was the best option.

Anybody who points to Warfield's base salary number this year and last really knows little about how NFL contracts work. In an age where most starting NFL CB's are fetching double digit signing bonuses, Warfield is in the lower portion of the NFL in total compensation for his services.

So, Boarding Bronco - when you learn something about how signing bonuses, roster bonuses, and the proration of such feel free to come back for more abuse. Until then spare us the agony.

And another thing. While the sky is blue, McMe-owned sucks, and Warfield has yet to earn that huge salary, Donk-fans are automatically disqualified to discuss other teams' contracts and salary concerns.

I know about the difference between guaranteed signing bonuses and not-guaranteed base salary. Which leads to my next point, he got busted 3 times for DUIs and the Chiefs still have him on the roster. What a great message to send to your community and players to keep a guy whose repeated negligence is a serious threat to the general public. The cap hit from cutting this drunk is chump change, yet the Chiefs continue to keep this underachiever on their roster.
