Stupid, random thread. I'm reading a book about President Lincoln's cabinet, which is very good so far. Anyone, one important member was Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy for the entire Civil War. He helped build a fleet out of literally nothing (when the Union announced the blockade of the Confederacy, it had something like 4 warships available to enforce it).

He was nicknamed "Father Neptune", and I don't think I've ever SEEN anyone who looked MORE perfect for his job...
