The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Kansas City Chiefs and QB Elvis Grbac might reach an impasse at the end of the season. Grbac is due a $10 million roster bonus on March 1 and if Grbac continues his torrid pace, he just might leave KC. The fans in Kansas City have been overly critical of their signal caller ever since he signed with them. During the Chiefs home opener against the Indianapolis Colts, the KC boo-birds were out in full force and they were not afraid to voice their displeasure over his performance. Now that Grbac is tied for the NFL lead in touchdowns with 10 (should be 13 TD’s since he has had 3 interceptions returned for scores) the boo-birds have been caged up. Grbac's deal was designed to reward him if he excelled this season or make him easy to trim if he falters.

So in essence, if he turns out to be a great QB, and gets the signing bonus, but because of the cap, KC can't pay him, the deciding factor to leave or stay in KC would be based on people "booing" him for making common mistakes that every other QB in the league makes. Sounds fair to me, but I sure don't think I would like to see it happen.

Bishop - Well, we can always look at it this way. If he decides to leave then the boo birds will find out how quickly they can find someone else to boo.

Morphius
Not sure why any QB's would ever really want to come to KC.

Wouldn't that be ironic if we would lose the best QB in 27 years because of 'boo birds'. I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up happening. If it does happen, then what in the heck are we going to do for a QB?

I don't know how many times I have said that I thought that EG would get fed up and leave and it would come back to haunt us. I hope it doesn't actually happen though.

The BEST QB in 27 years?! Surely you jest!
It's only been four games. Elvis has been doing great - for the last two games. Let's not equate him with Unitas, Manning, Dawson, Warner, etc. etc. etc...

Now if Elvis can do this for the season, then my hat's off to him and I hope he makes all the money he can get...
That should have been the best QB in 27 years for the Chiefs. I think the numbers compare better than the other imposters the Chiefs have had at QB with the possible exception of DeBerg.

Fans behind him or not, he's not going to go anywhere if he has a great year, because the ORGANIZATION stuck behind him through thick and thin, and he would be loyal to them.

Again IMO if he has a good year they tear up the contract and give him a new one like they said before the year, and if he has a mediocre year they could just release him and avoid the bonus and look for another journeyman QB...

Since when has a player (or organization) been "loyal"? $$ talks and we all know what walks. The only reason the Chiefs stuck with him is that Carl can't admit a mistake (not saying EG was one, but you gotta wonder).

I've posted this fact before, but it bears repeating...this town booed Len Dawson, the player that took them to the SB and who is still treated like an icon (and rightfully so). Hell, if Favre was the Chiefs QB we'd boo the hell out of him...he throws more INTs than anyone

It seems to me that some Chiefs fans expect a QB to never throw an INT (nice thought, but it doesn't happen) and to score on every drive. The Rams don't even do that...they're capable of it, but they still have a punter on the roster, so they know that won't happen.

As far as him leaving, I wouldn't be surprised, regardless of what happens. If even has a decent year there is one team that would probably love to have him, and one that he would love to go to...the Browns. Am I nuts for thinking this? I figure either them or San Diego would be interested...god knows they need the help, and if Elvis leaves on bad terms, then what better way than to go to a team that meets the Chiefs 2x a year?

Thats what I am saying Mark. He is going to go where the bucks ask him to go, and being in cap violation, we might be able to counter offer with a nice subscription to the KC Times. Somehow I don't think that will do it.

Again, I disagree. First of all, we have a nice young recieving corps. IF he continues and has a career year and throws 30 TD's like he says his goal is, why would he want to throw it all away and start all over in a crappy team like San Diego? Cleveland, there is NO WAY he goes there because they have Tim Couch and he'd have to be a backup.

As far as Carl sticking with him because he can't admit a mistake, what mistake would that be if he has a great year?

Certainly there will be teams offering nice money if he does indeed have a great year. However, should he have a great year, he has already stated that he wants to remain with the organization and the agent Steiner has said they will try to get something done. Since he will still be under contract, it will be a case of reworking the deal to eliminate the bonus and lower his cap hit significantly.

As far as our cap situation, remember we were supposed to be $20 million over the cap this year according to the papers last year. If we want to get people signed, there is always a way to get it done. However, a guy like Will Shields may have to be the odd man out, since we do need to get Gonzo signed to an extension too...

LOL! Maybe Lamar could pay him out of his own pocket, ala Dan Snyder, or whatever the Skins owner's name is...of course if we cut the dead weight of our half-dozen RBs and Chester "The Buffet Molester" McGlockton, maybe we could find room. The only question is, is Elvis worth $10 million? ...

Good points! I didn't know EG wanted to stay here. I figured with Jimmy "Can We Run the Option?" Raye calling the plays, he'd want to leave...fast. While I haven't been the biggest fan of EG, I was always willing to give him a chance. It takes time for a QB to develop...and the Chiefs haven't had the patience to let that happen with many QBs that have come through...only stop-gap acquisitions. If he has a great year I'd love to see him stay..if not, I still would. Stability is a good thing.

IMO, Grbac will never collect that bonus, even if KC wins the Super Bowl this season. He just might leave KC, but it will be because some other team has offered him mo' money, not because of some booing...give me a break.

Wow, there's already a built-in excuse for Grbac if he leaves KC in pursuit of more money.

"He didn't leave KC for the money! He's a stand-up guy that would never do that! He left because of booing fans!"

Either that, or the standard line from many former grbackers will be:

"Good riddance. He wasn't that good, anyway!"

BTW, OF COURSE he said he wants to stay in KC. That's the PC thing to say. It's not like he's going to ruin what little there is of his reputation & potentially cost himself money by saying, "I definitely want out of KC at the end of the season."
