RICHMOND, Va. -- Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison Monday for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy.

Federal sentencing guidelines suggested a year to 18 months.

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback also received three years' probation at his sentencing before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson.

With nearly a month already served, going by Hudson's sentencing, Vick would be scheduled for release in October 2009.

With credit for good time, 4.5 days a month, he could serve about 20 months total.

Since he started his sentence early, he could join a team for the 2009 season.

U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson could have sentenced the suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback to up to five years. Vick pleaded guilty in August, admitting he bankrolled the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting operation and helped kill six to eight dogs.

Hudson already sentenced two of Vick's co-defendants to 18 months and 21 months — slightly more than prosecutors recommended, but still within the guidelines. Legal experts said Hudson's willingness to stick to the guidelines in those cases was a positive sign for Vick, but by no means a guarantee he will get similar treatment because so many factors could work against him. Defendants typically get credit for acceptance of responsibility and contrition. Vick apologized at a news conference after entering his guilty plea, and he will have an opportunity to speak directly to the court before he is sentenced. Vick's lead attorney, Billy Martin, did not respond to an e-mail inquiry about possible character witnesses and whether Vick would directly address the court.

The judge brought the hammer down, i really didnt expect him to. The recommendation was a year to a year & a half.

He's kaput in the NFL, if he wants to play ball after this its gonna be in the arena league's or Canada.

Had he only came forward from the beginning of this he would have likely served no time at all, but instead he held firm to his conviction that what he was doing wasnt wrong and/or that he wouldnt get caught...wrong on both counts.

I believe he lied to the Commish and I doubt that goes over well when tring to get reinstated. Also with the NFL trying to improve it image with Bengals and other teams I am not sure too many teams are going to step up to the plate.
