Marty's Toughness...I miss it
The only difference in philosphy between Herm and Marty is toughness. Marty had guys line up and just punch the other guy in the mouth, no matter what side of the ball it was on.
Particularly on defense under Marty we attacked, attacked and attacked. That meant bringing LB's, playing man.......I can still remember the 95 D lining up 10 guys on the line just daring a team to snap the ball. Offesnivley there was never talk of having to simplify a playbook or protect guys. You protected the ****ing ball or your ass was benched. If you weren't getting the job done, ala McIntosh you were benched. Herm is too much of this simple offense and base cover 2, get eaten alive zone defense. Both coaches want(ed) to control the ball with running and play solid defense. Only Marty wasn't worried attacking the other team and making them deal with the guy in front of them. There were no schemes or tricks or anything, just line up and punch the ****er in front of you in the teeth and let his ass know there is 59:59 more of it to come. |
