Teicher: Chiefs buzz: Albert out for Carolina game

Chiefs buzz: Albert out for Carolina game

Albert won’t play in Carolina

The Chiefs listed Branden Albert as out for Sunday’s game against the Panthers in Charlotte on their injury report. Albert, who didn’t practice on Wednesday, dislocated his elbow in last week’s win against Denver.

Herb Taylor will instead start at left tackle.

The Chiefs said defensive end Tamba Hali (knee), cornerback Pat Surtain (shoulder) and cornerback Dimitri Patterson (quad) were limited in practice.

Quarterback Brodie Croyle (shoulder) and linebacker Donnie Edwards (ankle) also are out.

For the Panthers, neither of their starting offensive tackles nor starting cornerback Ken Lucas (ankle) practiced Wednesday. Left tackle Jordan Gross has a concussion and right tackle Jeff Otah has a sore ankle.

Wide receiver Bradley signed

The Chiefs added wide receiver Mark Bradley, signing him to a two-year contract. He was released last month by Chicago. Bradley joined the Bears in 2005 as a second-round draft pick but spent three-plus mostly disappointing seasons in Chicago. He had his best season when he was a rookie, making 18 catches.

That number fell to 14 the following season and six last year. He was released by Chicago this year after playing in two games and not making a catch.

“He just got into one of those situations where he got hurt and … he kind of got lost in the shuffle and that happens sometimes,” coach Herm Edwards said. “He was probably a little immature when he came into the league and expected things too fast. I think he’s more mature now.”

Sams released

The Chiefs released kick returner B.J. Sams to make roster room for Bradley. Sams averaged 20 yards per kickoff return and 8.3 yards per punt return in his brief time with the Chiefs.

Rookie Dantrell Savage will return punts. He and Jamaal Charles will rotate returning kickoffs.

“I thought he did a great job for us,” Edwards said of Sams. “We’ve just got a kid who we think can do a good job. It’s tough to carry a return guy. It takes up a (roster) spot.”

Johnson player of the week

Derrick Johnson was selected AFC defensive player of the week after Sunday’s 33-19 win over Denver.

Johnson had seven tackles, an interception, a half-sack and caused a fumble.

No Chiefs linebacker had been named player of the week since Mike Maslowski in 2002.

Practice squad changes

Three players joined the practice squad Wednesday:

•Cornerback A.J Davis. The 5-10, 193-pound Davis played at North Carolina State and has gone to training camp with Detroit and Cleveland.

•Guard Anthony Oakley, who played in three games last season for Chicago.

•Defensive end Jermaine McGhee, who played in college at Prairie View A&M.

Wide receiver Micah Rucker, cornerback Travarous Bain and defensive end Jason Parker were released from the practice squad.

If Taylor goes out there and holds his own in Albert's absense, they have to put him in at RT when Albert comes back. If he can hold that down giving us 2 good young starting tackles that will really help out this process.

I agree. Wonder what the deal with Richardson is?

I dunno but I'm really not enjoying this teams desire to continue to run McIntosh and Jones out there over and over.

I'm interested to see Taylor's run blocking, cause I've seen in quotes Herm talk about him as a pass blocker. Almost wonder if they don't think he's good enough run blocker to be on the right side (dumb cause Mac sucks), or if it's purely that he's the LT backup.

I really wish Richardson would get out there, wonder if he just is nowhere near ready, or if his contract is too small to be on the field?

I hear ya about Richardson, but he was a 6th round draft pick. It might be too much to ask to go from that to NFL starter in one year - even for a rebuilding team.

Careful Herm. You're actually starting to sound competent.

Just a crazy thought here ... but, is there a double standard at play when it comes to Albert? By last count, I believe that Albert has been injured the same number of times as Croyle. Nevertheless, I haven't seen one single person claim that Albert is injury prone or made of glass or a big p*ssy or one of those funky little Christmas ornaments made out of paper maché that turn into a little glob of mush if the humidity passes 80% or you accidently urinate on it after you've had 4 martinis and you accidentally mistake the Christmas tree for a toilet or you think you're outside when you really aren't.

Don't drink your martinis from a bucket then, and that won't happen.

Actually I have seen a few people on the board make that claim about Albert. But I don't believe it yet.

The differences between Albert and Croyle are (1) Albert is a rookie (2) playing a new position (3) who missed the entire preseason, yet (4) has come in and so far at least appears to be an above-average LT. Croyle has a few years under his belt and so far hasn't shown himself to be even one of the top 20 QB's in the NFL.

I think lost in the shuffle of this thread so far is Mark Bradley.

Living in Illinois...this guy had LOADS of potential as a rookie and has a good head on his shoulders and I thought he was going to be the real deal for the Bears.

I think that is a HUGE signing. I think he can be really, really, really good, and I'm not kidding.

If he doesn't get hurt...he's kind of like the Croyle of WR's.

Word.

I'm just saying, when he was a rookie and the year after his ACL injury...the Bears thought he was BETTER than Bernard Berrian.

He's better than Jeff Webb at least =)
