Another Mock Draft: Detroit Lions-style

http://sidelionreport.com/2009/01/17...on-to-the-max/

Don’t be shocked that I have the Lions taking a QB. I don’t agree with it or think its a good idea, I have entire posts on that. But it’s probably going to go down like that. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll stick with defense. It doesn’t matter who, just make sure they’re good. We have so many issues with talent that need to be addressed, we need to acquire players in bulk and replace well over half the roster.

#TeamPick
1Detroit Lions
(0-16)
Matt Stafford QB (Georgia) -
This will be met with a resounding *thud* as Lions Fans that know a thing or two about football will smack themselves on the forehand with the [face_palm] emotion. D’oh! We will scream “You’re supposed to take Andre Smith you morons!” and casual, typical Detroit fans will go to the team website and buy a “Stafford” Jersey.

2St. Louis Rams
(2-14)
Andre Smith OT (Ala’bamy) -
Laughing hysterically, the Rams will wonder what the hell the Lions are doing, skip up the steps to the podium and do a cartwheel back to the table while the GM breaks open a bottle of decent tequila. They can finish the draft drunk, as there is no possibility of a ‘bad draft’ after being given this gift.

3Kansas City Chiefs
(2-14)
Mark Sanchez QB (USC Trojans) -
This pick will be delivered with a broken pen, so the ‘Z’ on the card will be all blotchy and runny. Pioli is going to be pissed. He probably wanted Stafford, but Sanchez will have to do. The Chiefs have a legitimate need for a passer to develop, and Sanchez is a late entry and under developed; QB’s that leave early don’t often do that well, but Pioli is going to have a system in place in a few years and frankly, the team isn’t as bad as that record. Or he’ll draft Curry or one of the solid tackles in this draft.

4Seattle Seahawks
(4-12)
Micheal Crabtree WR (Texas Tech)
The ‘hawks will be addressing a serious need and this kid is seriously talented.

5Cleveland Browns
(4-12)
Aaron Curry ILB (Wake Forest) -
With a new coach that wants to run the 3-4, the Browns will be looking to shore up the linebackers. Shaun Rogers will haze the rookie by eating all of his cake and ice cream during team ‘cake and ice cream unity’ parties.

6Cincinnati Bengals
(4-11-1)
Michael Oher OT (Ole Miss) -
With change needed, the Bengals aren’t as clueless as the Lions and will select the next best Tackle. With a sizeable line, your skill positions will flourish and you will make the playoffs. However, the Lions will sell more ‘Stafford’ jerseys than ‘Oher’ jerseys.

7Oakland Raiders
(5-11)
Jeremy Maclin WR (Miss’ura) -
With Crabtree gone, the Raiders will be itching to make yet another bad decision. Russel needs someone to throw to, right? Then McFadden will run all over the place. Right. They are the Millen Lions of the West Coast. Kalimba Edwards will welcome the rookie with cookie crumbs in his athletic supporter.

8Jacksonville Jaguars
(5-11)
Eugene Monroe OT (Virginia) -
With Gerard running like a scared man all season long (except for his carving up of the Detroit Lions in that 40 something to whatever murderfest at Ford Field, the Jags will look to shore up their offense line.

9Green Bay Packers
(6-10)
Malcolm Jenkins CB (Ohio State) -
Woodson is getting old at 33 and stopping the pass seemed to be an issue for the cheese heads. The Packer nation will cheer and spill cheese and beer all over the clothes they wear, purchased from the tractor supply store.

10San Francisco 49ers
(7-9)
Aaron Maybin DE
(State Penn … er.. Penn State) -
Mike Singletary is the new boss and he is going to want a nasty, vicious pass rush. This young man will need some development, but his sacking skills will do well under a Singletary Defensive scheme and will likely look better in a suit with white sneakers on.

11Buffalo Bills
(7-9)
Brian Orakpo DE (Texas) -
The Bills couldn’t make enough pressure on opposing QB’s. With Curry snatched up, this is the best choice on the board for them. The ghost of Thurman Thomas will cause a fumble of the draft card. Bill’s fans know how that goes on the big day.

12Denver Broncos
(8-8)
Rey Maualuga ILB (USC Trojans) -
What was Denvers problem this year? They experienced a late season skid because they couldn’t stop the run. The kid with the name that’s hard to spell will fall into their hands and he will be managed by the guy that wore the silly suits on the side line. Though, I do admit, despite not really fitting in, Nolan looked pretty snappy.

13Washington Redskins
(8-8)
Jason Smith OT (Baylor) -
It will be talked about that Smith has fallen this far and the Skins will gobble him up. Mark Ripen will have a smug sense of self satisfaction that day as someone might know who he is. That’s a joke people… I’m kidding around Mark! Nobody knows who you are, they are googling it right now.

14New Orleans Saints
(8-8)
James Laurinaitis ILB (Ohio State)

Saints may have trouble keeping Jonathan Vilma and they need to shore up their Linebackers anyway.

15Houston Texans
(8-8)
Vantae Davis CB (Illinois) -

The Texans had a great deal of trouble stopping other teams in the air this year, they even got stuck in a shootout with the Lions (briefly), this player will fall into their hands.

16New York Jets
(9-7)
Everette Brown DE (Florida State) -
With the new title of merely “Second Most Questionable Firing” now deemed upon them in the wake of the Gruden firing, the Jets will be looking to beef up their pass rush.

I'm on a huge Crabtree kick lately.

I think watching the Cardinals has made me loopy.

I've listened to several so-called "experts" & they all seem to say he is the most elite talent in this draft.

If he's that elite, I want him. I want elite-types of talent on this team.

Another thing I found interesting about this mock was that I guess Lion fans don't want a QB with the first pick?

I'm all but resigned that the lions will go QB. schwartz, their new coach, has all but said they have to get a QB (and they're in prime position to get one). I just hope it isn't stafford.

http://sidelionreport.com/2009/01/13...first-overall/

Do the Lions Draft a QB First Overall?

The Question of the Day! (even though its January. And we haven’t even finished the Championship Playoff.) But it’s not like I have a Lions matchup to talk about so, here we are.

With Tebow declaring that he will stay with the Florida Gators for his senior season**, the primary choices at Quarterback for the first round are Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford. (anyone else get a chuckle out of the ‘Ford’ thing?) Bradford looked in a little over his head in the National Championship Bowl and apparently, Stafford and Bobby Lane went to the same High School. Fate?

**EDITORS NOTE: TIM, I THINK THAT’S A GREAT IDEA ~ Matt Leinart

…right.
Enter Matt Stafford and some hot chick (athletes get those, did you know that?)

Pundits are declaring that Stafford is ready to be plugged into a pro style offense, much like the unexpected success that was Matt Ryan in Atlanta and Joe Flacco out of the University of Delaware of all places. And here I though they were silly to put Matt Ryan on the cover of the PS3 NCAA Football game!

He showed me, the kid looked like a stud all season long.

For the Lions however, there is a special set of needs. By ’special’, I mean that we need literally everything. We’ve got Calvin Johnson and I guess you could say that Kevin Smith showed us something this year.

QB is not a position we should address first pick overall.

Big, Nasty, Sack of Potatoes Eating Linemen. That’s what I want.

Like an I.V., there is a continuing and mounting drip of evidence that first round QB’s, especially Heisman winners, don’t really pan out in the bigs. The best argument you can make is Carson Palmer and that is not currently going very well.

So really we need to delve deeply into the mind of the NFL Football fan, what really is this obsession with offense and boom bang wizz pop kablamo draft moves? Why was it that Ford Field was 80% Joey Harrington jerseys 6 years ago? Or the Rogers Jerseys 5 years ago? Or the Williams Jerseys 4 years ago? Or the M. Williams Jerseys 3 years ago (LOL you really wasted your money if you bought that crap)? I think my years are right, if not… you get the point anyways. What is this obsession of the common fan? It goes beyond even that… Jim Shwartz had his second interview today and said that he felt no franchise can flourish without a quality franchise QB.

I’m not really trying to negate that concept completely, but I still reserve my right to cite the NY Giants (Eli Manning : 5 of 24 on passes over 5 yds. nuff said.), I further cite the New England Patriots and their plugging in of Matt Cassel to a 10+ victory season after their star Tom Brady went down. Where are your “Franchise Quarterbacks” right now? Doing what you and I are doing. Watching the games on TV. Right Peyton? Carson? Mike Vick (I had to throw that in there, yeah I know, I’m a jerk)?

Donovan McNabb is a franchise QB, agree?

I think he is, but don’t ask a philly fan. They hate him. He’s one of the few top picks that actually looks good, but philly fans booed when he was taken after Tim Couch. They wanted Ricky “sticky icky” Williams. They’ve been talking about chasing McNabb and Reid out of town on a rail, gagged and bound all season long. Amazing what winning can do, isn’t it?
"I'm filling my Depends... With Poop."

Kurt Warner was never groomed to be a football god, he came from the arena leagues and until about 2 weeks ago, we all felt that he was going into the books as a product of a Mike Martz system powered by Faulk/Bruce/Hakim (just kidding, little Lions humor there, I meant the other guy). He was a journeyman place holder in NY.

Would you argue that Roethlesberger is a game changing QB like Favre or Peyton?

I would tell you that he hands it off when he’s told too and he doesn’t turn the ball over and stress out the fabulous defense that he gets to play on the same team with. And for that, I love him.

The Lions have a guy that can hold down the position. Orlovsky is a vanilla cream pie. It’s not going to win any international tasting awards but if you’ve had a nice meal and you’re looking to settle in with some hot coffee and a tasty slice of pie, well that vanilla cream pie is going to deliver! Our own Dan didn’t give it away and he fed the ball to our rising super star Calvin Johnson. I like this.

I love simple fundamental football; Defense to win it, run to control the clock and if you have a star, give him the damn ball. Ask Bill Parcels. Ask Belicheck. Build a system, worry about flashy positions later.

Is Mayhew pulling off another move? Suckering some sucker into the bait like San Diego did to the Falcons in the Mike Vick draft move? I hope so. If he does, I’m taking a collection, we’re going to send Mayhew a nice gift basket full of fine cheeses and assorted nuts.

Some Chief fans are still suffering from a Todd Blackledge hang-over. I imagine the Joey Harrington hang-over is just raging about now.

That's probably it but I thought they'd all be wanting a QB....very few actually do.

I am whole heartedly against drafting the Dirty Sanchez.
He's just too raw to take that early.

Yep. Crabtree is the shit. We got the best player in the last draft, and we will have a chance at the best player in this draft.
