Are Catholic Schools too expensive?

God's Will!

http://www.khou.com/topstories/stori....21fe1923.html

Four Catholic schools closing in June

HOUSTON – Holy Name Catholic Elementary School is in its final school year. The school announced that it will not be open for classes next August.

"I'm sad to see that the school is going to be closing. They've been here forever," said Maria Ramirez, who's daughter has gone to the school for two years.

Hundreds of other students and parents were getting the same letter at three other schools.

In addition to Holy Name, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has decided to close Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School in Northeast Houston, St. Charles Borromeo on Tidwell Road, and St. Phillip Neri in Southeast Houston.

On Friday, the Archdiocese addressed the closures. They say the closures came after they reviewed an 18-month study on how to best to consolidate local Catholic schools and cut costs.

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo said that he believes that the Archdiocese has made the best plan to help position the Catholic schools for excellence for the next 20 years.

Officials say that students transferring into a higher tuition school can retain their previous tuition for a whole year. After that, officials say, they will have to pay whatever tuition their new school requires.

Also, teachers and administrators will be given top priority to transfer to other schools.

The Diocese will hold a job fair to help displaced workers find other employment.

Parents and school board members at St. Philip Neri, one of the schools slated for closure, told 11 News that they felt betrayed and duped. In fact, school board members have reportedly put together a letter where they call the decision a return to pre-1960 racism. They reportedly plan to give that letter to Cardinal DiNardo.

"Two of the schools that are closing are traditionally African-American schools. Our Mother Mercy, St. Philips, and the other school are traditionally 90 percent Hispanic," said St. Philips School Board Member, Dr. Cleverick Johnson.

"I am very surprised, shocked, upset, hurt, and angry. I mean words can't express how I feel,” said Price Boop who is a parent.

In a similar move, the Archdiocese closed Mt. Carmel High School last year.

According to the National Catholic Education Association, nearly 1,300 Catholic schools consolidated or closed in the last eight years.

Are they expensive? Yes. There are much more expensive schools out there though.

Catholic schools are funded by parents and parishioners though.

Our daughter - kindergarten - goes to Catholic school. The cost is about the same as when we sent her to pre-school three days a week. So no, I don't think they're too expensive. In fact, I'd say the cost is more than reasonable.

High schools are considerably pricier, of course.

I guess it depends who you ask. They're more expensive than the days when priests and nuns staffed them. Lay people cost more than priests. They're a serious expense to most families that send their children there, I would say. Especially if you have several or more students and there is no fee reduction. Many schools do have that option though.

Yep. I so look forward to putting 4 kids through Catholic High School. It will be worth it though. I don't trust any of our public schools.

Tuition is free to any Registered parish member that is active with their stewardship.

That is technically NOT free. I wish people would stop saying it that way. It used to be that way here but too many parishioners shirked their commitments so they went to a tuition based setup. Too many freeloaders out there taking advantage of the churches charity.
