Romeo Crennel

A source close to Romeo Crennel said Tuesday night the former Cleveland head coach and former New England defensive coordinator is not close to joining the Kansas City staff as a defensive coordinator. It is possible, at some point, the source said, that Crennel could join former New England colleague Scott Pioli as a defensive consultant.

that is because he is going to be on crutches for a while

CLEVELAND -- Former Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel will put off making a decision about his football future until after he has hip replacement surgery next month, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported.

NFL.com Video

New Browns head coach Eric Mangini discusses his vision for the franchise.
Crennel, who was fired at the end of this season, has been asked by new Browns coach Eric Mangini to stay with the team in an undisclosed role. The two men are friends and worked together for five seasons with the New England Patriots, where they were part of three Super Bowl championships.

"We've been talking about that, definitely," Crennel said, according to the report. "I haven't committed totally. I told everybody that's talked to me that I'm going to get my hip done and then after that see what's available and make some decisions at that point."

But Crennel's surgery will come first. According to the report, he had been putting off the replacement for years until finally deciding to have it done this offseason -- a decision he made before he was relieved of his duties as head coach.

"It was a lot tougher to move around and stand, so I just knew I needed to get something done," Crennel said, according to The Plain Dealer. "It's uncomfortable and it wasn't going to get any better."

so maybe this is why they are playing the stupid "don't give them a title" game

because they don't want to name someone defensive coordinator and then have to "demote" them in a month if Romeo Crennel comes aboard.

if they can't give a title to the defensive coordinator then they can't give a title to anyone because they don't want everyone to know which coaching position is still up for grabs.

They probably do know their jobs

i imagine Gibbs is the only one who doesn't

Gibbs will be Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach if Crennel doesn't get hired or will be Assistant defensive coordinator/linebackers coach if Crennel does.

he prolly has as pay bump, included in the contract, if Crennel doesn't coach this year

Friends, also I'm pretty sure they have a good idea of what their role is if they don't already know.

I figured NE's former secondary coach we hired would be our secondary coach.

Good! Maybe we'll actually be able to run block this year. Might even be able to pass block w/o playing in the gun formation the entire time.
