Top prospect has cancer

http://bceagles.cstv.com/sports/m-fo...051409aaa.html

Mark Herzlich has bone cancer a form called Ewing's Sarcoma.

The best case scenario is Chemo that would put anyone out of commission for four months, likely more. It is extremely rare for Ewing's Sarcoma to actually go away however and continuous treatment is almost always needed. The chances of presuming a football career at a college or professional level is very slim with this type of cancer due to the treatment and weakening to the body it does. The chances of survival has rose and most teenage men, when found early enough will live at least 5-10 more years, but likely will suffer an earlier death than most (Late 50s is usually the best one can hope for since as a person gets older, the disease spreading is more likely).

With the type of cancer this is, his career is over. With the nature of this just surviving will be an accomplishment, I feel bad for him.

Cancer is bullshit. You can be perfectly healthy, ideal weight, eat right, work out all the time, and get colon cancer, or nut cancer, or something weird and croak. Scares me. Nobody in my family dies of heart disease or stroke or anything really except, cancer.

That's shitty cosmic luck. Too bad it couldn't have been diagnosed a couple of years later so that his family could have the guaranteed money from his rookie deal.

I'm wondering how much of a premium this will now place on a guy like Brandon Spikes. I know that Herzlich was an outside strongside lineback, but was considered to be near Curry level in terms of talent and intangibles and was basically the only outside linebacker in this next draft that had true NFL size that would allow him to play in either a 4-3 or 3-4 alignment. The other top prospects are darn near safety size which means that they would be downgraded in terms of the increasing number of teams who are now looking at running 3-4 schemes.

Either that, or the college DE (a la Orakpo, Brown, Kruger and the like from this past draft) is now the 3-4 OLB, and the college LB is the 4-3 OLB.

Should we, as Chiefs fans, now even worry about looking at the prospect who are playing at OLB in college as feasible prospect for the Chiefs organization?

There's a ton of tweener rush backer types in next years draft, so it's not a huge concern to a 3-4 team.

we could use depth there, but as far as first day prospects, it depends on dj's season.

if he struggles again, then yes. we'll need a pass coverage ilb(not that it's a high priority)

and either way we'll need a big run stuffer to replace Thomas soon, depending on how the new guys already brought in perform
