Lie to Me
Anyone else watch this? I do for one reason: Tim Roth.
Roth plays a psychologist/detective ace who can help solve crimes by talking to suspects and looking at the microexpressions in their face which show if they are lying. The science might be sketchy, but it's based on the actual work of a real psychologist, which makes the whole show's premise a bit more plausible. Roth leads his team of experts help solve crimes that (the show stresses) incompetent and arrogant police, even FBI agents can't figure out themselves. I laughed out loud during one episode when Roth explained the problems of lie detector tests to a bewildered federal agent and his comically disapproving boss who had just spent the Bureau's money on a ton of new machines. The modern, corporate studio they call home is manned by who knows how many people (in the last episode, he gathers around 20 people for an announcement) and features implausible CSI-like state of the art equipment. Roth's partner is a woman whose main role is to explain to people what Roth is doing at the present time. Roth says something strange, or does a unique procedure, and the lady fills in nicely with information. There's also problems with a cheating husband, and since they are experts in detecting lies, it's basically the elephant in the room that everyone dances around for dramtic sake. The other two sidekicks are young experts who provide back up help for the Roth and the partner and some sexual tension drama. The young male keeps it entertaining by always telling the truth, and the young female is a "natural," extremely talented, but raw and lacking the sophistication and formal study. Roth is pretty entertaining to watch though. There is also an element of mystery surrounding his character's background and what makes him tick. He and his character makes up for plenty in any of the downright silly other things that appear in the show. If you haven't seen it, Fox shows it online with limited commercials, so check it out there or wait for Wednesday. Last edited by Jenson71; 04-06-2009 at 10:04 PM.. |
