Market Research Question for Daface/ Rain Man
Hey Supreme Market Research Guru God Guys,

I have a db over every business in America that we are segmenting the data on. There are over 17 million businesses in America... and on this dbase only about 10% of them have their URL attached to the data...

However each one of them has their industry SIC code attached to the record along with their annual revenue numbers for 2008.

I have another list of about 115 business niches that are the industries that most heavily advertise in the yellow pages... and Im trying to figure out the best way to grab all of the SIC information about each niche so that those records in those industries can be queried and parsed from the database.

Any idea where I could get this information from so I can work some mashup magic?

So you're basically trying to append an SIC to each niche? Give me a sample of some of the niches you're looking at.

That's probably about the best you'll be able to do. SIC codes go to a ton of levels of detail, so you'll probably just want to do a keyword search for each niche, then pick the broadest that still makes sense. I've never known any easy automated way to look up SIC/NAICS codes. Once you have a broad SIC assigned to each niche, you'll need to do some sort of lookup to match the businesses and the niches together. You could do it in Excel using a find() function probably.

Interesting that SIC codes are being phased out and haven't been updated since 1987... the NAICS is the important code now.

Yep. I've never figured out why DnB (my guess is that's where you're getting your info) keeps using SIC codes. The BLS hasn't used them in years.
