Teicher: Veterans Darling, Boone won’t play for team this season

Chiefs notebook: Veterans Darling, Boone won’t play for team this season
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

Devard Darling and Alfonso Boone opened training camp as starters for the Chiefs — Darling at wide receiver and Boone at defensive end.

Neither will be playing for the Chiefs this season. Darling, who tore knee ligaments during last weekend’s game against Seattle, was placed on the injured-reserve list. Boone was released.

Those were two of the five moves made by the Chiefs as they trimmed their roster to 75 players Tuesday as mandated by the NFL. The Chiefs also released veteran wide receiver Amani Toomer and rookie offensive lineman Cameron Goldberg and placed running back Kolby Smith on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Smith will be eligible to return to the active roster later in the season.

Darling carried his starting spot into the Seattle game. He had three catches for 19 yards in the preseason. He has since been replaced by Mark Bradley.

Boone was squeezed when the Chiefs drafted defensive ends Tyson Jackson and Alex Magee and moved Glenn Dorsey over from tackle. Boone eventually relinquished his starting spot at left end to Jackson and played only sparingly in the loss to the Seahawks.

The Chiefs signed Toomer shortly after the start of camp in the hope he could play as well as he did for many seasons with the New York Giants. Toomer showed an ability to catch the ball when it came his way, but otherwise made little impact.

Haley’s time in demand

As a head coach, and a rookie one at that, Todd Haley has plenty to do without worrying about the next offensive play call. But he took on that extra duty when he fired Chan Gailey as offensive coordinator.

Haley acknowledged that his time during the week and the games will be in demand, saying he will rely on assistant coaches such as Clancy Pendergast, Gary Gibbs, Bill Muir and Maurice Carthon. Pendergast is the defensive coordinator and the others have been coordinators at some point during their coaching careers.

“I’m going to be busier,” Haley said. “I’ve got to be very efficient with my time. I’d like to have somebody take over my media duties. That would make a lot more time available.

“That’s something I’ve put a lot of thought into. I’m grateful I’ve got some former coordinators, multiple coordinators, around me all the time. In a game, that’s where we’ll have to be efficient. For us to be successful, I have to be the head coach of the team — offense, defense and special teams — and I have to be able to manage the game. That’s my number one job.”

A handful of head coaches around the league call their own offensive plays. Most, if not all, have coordinators to draw up the weekly game plans, but Haley will be the coordinator.

Was there ever a reason given for the Gailey firing?

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Has he indeed been fired, or is he still with the organization "in some unknown capacity"?

Haley indirectly said that if there were a contest for the worlds biggest nice guy loser Gailey would come in second because he is such a loser.

But he also has the up most respect for Gaily's loser ass.

I don't think either made it into the Chiefs Training Camp Hall of Fame. Mays may need a couple tries.
