Are NFL cheerleaders going the way of stewardesses?

Back in the 60s when discrimination was fine and we had a gogo economy, stwardesses had age and weight limits. Then the government decided that was illegal, and now when you combine that with the maturity of the airline industry we've got stewardesses who ... um ... are not subject to age and weight limits. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and if the plane is going to crash it's probably better to have a highly experienced flight attendant screaming since their voices probably aren't as shrill.

But I've noticed the last couple of NFL games I've seen, there have been cheerleaders who look like they're eligible to run for the presidency. I started thinking about this, and don't remember when all the teams started getting cheerleaders. (And yeah, I know that there were cheerleaders back in the 60s, but I'm talking about cheerleaders who wear skimpy clothes and don't carry megaphones and shake their pompons more forcefully.) The Cowboys had them back in the early 80s, and I bet the other teams started getting them in the late 80s. Is the NFL cheerleader industry now mature, and we're going to see the veterans hanging on like Brett Favre in sequins?

Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders date back to at least the mid '70s.

I think it depends on the team. Different teams have different standards.

Back in the late 90's i had a good friend that lived in Stockton that was friends with a Raiderette. She used to go to his and his wifes house and get stoned with them. lol I got a damned autograph from her, but i was being nice and "accidently" left it at his house. I didnt want no ****ing Poster of anything Raiders. lol She was ****ing smoking hot though.

I'm just waiting for the cheerleaders to come out sporting tattoos like they are yakuza warlords and have piercings that look like they got too close to an explosion in a paper clip factory... Call me old fashioned, but I like girls who are perky and pretty on the sidelines and I don't care if they are not like they were in the 60s and 70s, necessarily, but as long as they don't start looking like someone kicked them off the back of a Harley at 50 mph, it's okay with me.

The league/teams just need to start paying them. It's not like it will cost alot compared to other thing going on and the league has the cash.

right now i think the pay them next to nothing

The cowboy cheerleaders do a bunch of other stuff to make money.

They get paid $50 bucks a game plus they get a cut of their appreance fees. Its a resume builder for those girls more than anything.

I think cheerleaders are awesome at the collegiate level... at the pro level they are pointless.

Forget going the way of stewardesses, I want to see them go the way of the Dodo.

The Raiderettes had a 40 year old grandma cheering in '03. I remember seeing an interview. She was hot...

http://www.raiderdrive.com/a-long-way-granny.htm

Raiderette Kathy Ferrin has come a long way—from Los Angeles, where at age 24, she was a Raiderette in 1986-87, to Oakland, where at age 40, she is once again cheering for the Silver & Black. In fact, three to four days a week, she travels a long way. The Orange County resident commutes to the Bay Area for Raiderette practices, games, and mandatory public appearances. But perhaps her greatest journey of late has been the transition from mom to grandmom.

Kathy retired in 1987 from the Raiderettes to concentrate on being a mother, but she returned in April 2003 to regain a spot on the squad. On November 9, 2003, at the Raiders-Jets game, she cheered for the first time as a grandmother. Although the Raiders lost in overtime, she still had much to cheer about.

I'm saying to at the Pro level.

I *LOVE* going to college games and seeing some freshman kick one leg in the air and flashing her goods to everyone in the stadium.

Husker stadium is probably one of the best for that as you can go to the sideline before the game right by where the opposing cheerleaders are. I go down to that area of the stadium before every game I attend.
