I was in glacier national park last summer. I went on one of the easier hiking trails and when I got to the end of it at the base of the lake, across the lake about 50 feet away was a mama black bear and two cubs pushing a log through the water. Pretty cool stuff.

I was camping with some friends in Wyoming one time when a very niced-sized black bear decided to pay us a visit in the middle of the night in the rain.

I learned a couple of things that night; 1) No matter how big it is, it's real hard to see a black bear in the dark and in the rain. 2) There is such a thing as an insta-latrine.

I'm pretty sure that statistically, black bear are more dangerous to people overall, if they really come after you... its for a meal, not just trying to intimidate because you surprised them.
