If Ngata gets tagged....

Would he be worth the first and third in addition to the contract he demands? Methinks yes. I mean, who are you going to get in those picks that can have such a tremendous impact immediately?

*wait for inevitable cry of those who don't want to spend all that money on the d-line...*

It would cost 2 firsts to trade for a franchise guy. If all it would take would be a first and third, teams would be lining up to make that deal. Baltimore has the option to take less, but I doubt they would.

It does not take two firsts to trade for a franchise player. You can trade a franchise player for whatever the other team agrees to. We got Cassel and Vrabel for a 2nd.

I think the most important element of the internet is the global sharing of nearly every single shred of the world's recorded knowledge. Even in something like football discussions, it's not necessarily about the quality of all the arguments, but the fact that they're present and being addressed. The internet (and on a smaller scale Chiefsplanet) is a free market of idea exchange, where truly the best ideas that are the even the most unfamiliar will eventually rise to the top.

This is not one of those ideas.

For the other team to be forced to give up the player, the trading team has to submit two first rounders unless the team that owns the rights of the player will take less.

The Patriots couldnt afford Matt Cassel at the franchise tag and were just getting what they could for him.

No way possible they take much less than the two firsts.

There are also two types of franchise tags...

There are two types of franchise tag designations: the exclusive rights franchise tag, and non-exclusive rights franchise tag:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franchise_tag
* An "exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of a date in April of the current year in which the tag will apply, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams.
* A "non-exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position in the previous year, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

The franchise tag would cost a little over 7 million...I would offer him a long haul contract with something like 7 years for 60 million and the guy would earn every penny...but only if the compensation was like a first and second absolute MAX

I would give a 1st and 3rd for Ngata. Not going to happen though.

I would give a 1st and 3rd for Fitz. Could happen, but unlikely.

I would give a 1st and 3rd to move up and grab Gabbert. Not going to happen.

The franchise tag discussion is irrelevant anyway, BossChief. The CBA expiration puts its fate up in the air.

Getting ready to say this. I thought I read somewhere recently that players want to remove the tag altogether. It does seem a little ****ed up from their stand point. You don't wish to play for team X anymore, so you let your contract expire in hopes you can go find work at a place you would prefer. Team X tags you and keeps you from going to where you would like (yes they get paid a heap of cash, but still, kind of ****ed up).

I think I would like to see it removed altogether. More big name players would be in play for all teams to go after, and it means teams will have to be better with their money, and maybe they won't throw it down the toilet on 1st overall picks like JaBustus Russell.

If they did away with the franchise tag altogether, it would be a mistake IMO.

Point well taken. It just intrigued me a little. I was curious what the CP populous might think. Additionally, I stand corrected with respect to the franchise tag.

As I think about it more, we would be lucky to get five good years of productivity from Ngata. Two first round picks could collectively provide substantially more value than that. On the other hand, our defense would be unstoppable with Ngata for a few years. Hehe.

I would trade two firsts for him without a doubt...He is literally unblockable and can play anywhere on the line...Plus it would be (hopefully) two first rounders in the 20's and we have a hard enough time picking someone who isn't going to bust in the top 5
