What's our most important need on defense?

Not to remind everyone how bad our defense sucks, but think about these stats and then post your opinion on the poll:
We ranked 30th in Total Defense, 22nd in Passing Defense, 31st in Rush Defense, 29th in Scoring Defense. We ranked #16 in Total Tackles, #31 in Total Sacks, #8 in Passes Defensed, #16 in Interceptions and tied for last place with # of Forced Fumbles.

So basically we were weak as hell against the run, middle of the pack against the pass without a pass rush and near the worst in the league in scoring.

We gave up 6,211 yards of offense to other teams for 424 points. 3,707 of that was thru the air while 2,504 of it was on the ground. Averages were 388.2 total yards a game with 231.7 coming thru the air and 156.5 on the ground with 26.5 points per game. Comparatively speaking the #16 ranked teams averages were 326.9 total yards, 215.4 passing, 112.4 ground and 20.4 points per game.

Obviously teams had no problem passing on us but you could hardly say that the secondary is the weak link of our defense.

Given that, what position do you think is most important to upgrade?

I voted for SS. I know Edwards and Smith aren't the answer at NT, and our ILB's leave much to be desired, but at the moment we don't have a SS unless it's Langford and we don't have a body of work by him to judge. So many holes. I could see us easily going NT in the first, SS and ILB in the second. Piss poor timing on changing to the 3-4 coupled with the trade for Cassel.

NT, followed closely by a pass-rushing OLBer. That said, the value is Berry, if things fall like most have surmized.

The better question is "what DON'T we need on defense?"

Answer: 5-techniques and CB1.

You realize you asked two completely different questions, don't you?

The most important need is NT. By far.

The position most in need of an upgrade is SS. Closely followed by ILB.

Well, were are running a 3-4 so Im going to have to say first and foremost you can't run a 3-4 effectively w/o a good nose.

Id say that is the most glaring need right now.

Secondly, our linebackers are horrible. Weve got no ILB's and I think we could use an elite passrusher at the other OLB spot. So I'd say OLB is the second most glaring need right now. Despite the season Hali had, he is a liability against the run, and I still think the passrush is atrocious with him.

I really feel the Chiefs could use to two new ILB's. We need more guys in here that could stop the run. The run defense needs to improve the most. Adding a good NT, and a couple of good ILB's should do the trick. It's obvious, R. Edwards, D. Williams and Mays aren't the solutions in that category, and would best serve their roles as backups on this team.

Front 7 of the defense is the area that needs the most improvement as far as im concerned.

Id rank it in this order:

-NT
-OLB
-2 ILB's
-Safety

*I know there are a lot of Berry lovers out there, and if he is there at 5 you take him only because he is the BPA at the time when we pick and his talent and leadership skills shouldn't be overlooked. But, I will say, he addresses a need but not a most important need. It would be a luxury to have him, and I'll say this, they need to address the LBer positions or try to get a NT in rounds 2, 3, and 4. I'd love to see the linebacking corps revamped. I think that desperately needs to happen, and if the Chiefs could find a nose somewhere or if Shaun Smith could surprise, that would be a BIG plus.
