Pittsburg QB problems continue B. Leftwich hurt
Just what the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't need: Quarterback Byron Leftwich left Thursday's preseason finale with a knee injury. An MRI exam was planned to determine its severity.
Leftwich was expected to be the Steelers' starter while Ben Roethlisberger is suspended. He left in the first half of an exhibition against the Carolina Panthers at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field after being felled by a teammate. Team doctors examined Leftwich on a stretcher behind the Steelers' bench, according to the Associated Press. Leftwich then limped into a nearby tunnel that leads to the locker room. Team officials said he would not return to the game. Leftwich was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Leftwich completed an 18-yard pass to rookie Emmanuel Sanders before being knocked off his feet as running back Mewelde Moore attempted to block safety Marcus Hudson. The play occurred with 10:25 left in the second quarter. The Steelers now must turn to Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch for their quarterbacks, barring a transaction. Dixon started a game last season when Roethlisberger was injured. Dixon came into the game after Leftwich was injured, staying for three plays in a drive that ended in the 23-yard touchdown pass to Sanders, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
