I can't play the piano for shit, but I can play the organ.
(Seriously. I could never figure out how hard to hit the keys. But I can play electronic keyboards a million times better.) |

Had lessons as a kid as way of introduction to music. About 3rd grade I switched to trumpet and never looked back. Of course I have not touched a trumpet since I graduated high school many, many, many moons ago.

It's actually pretty easy to play keyboards, BTW. If you can hunt-and-peck the melody it pretty much tends to highlight the chord.
For chords, pick the letter and add two more keys. Major chord: 4-3 (four keys up, then three keys up) Minor chord: 3-4 (three keys up, then four keys up) 7th chord: add a fourth key by going back two steps from the chord key. Examples: C major = C-E-G F minor = F-Aflat-C G major 7th = G-B-D-F Chords tend to resolve in familiar patterns. C-F-G-C, or C Bflat Aflat C. Listen to enough songs and it's not that hard to pick something up by ear. |

I really want to learn the piano. Really. It's a goal of mine at some point.
Here in Denver they have a fun thing on the downtown mall where I work. In the summer they bring out a bunch of pianos and just set them along the pedestrian mall. Anyone who wants to play can play. I've never figured out if they pay some starving musicians to play them, but you'll often hear some pretty good players. I think they stole the concept from some other city if I remember right, but it was worth stealing.

Thanks for taking my entire educational focus for most of my life and simplifying it into a single post that any asshole can pick up if they want to learn how to play "Piano Man" |

Yeah, I took his post out to the pianos on the sidewalk and I can now do a pretty passable version of the intro to Bat Out Of Hell. Now I just need a one-post lesson in electric guitar and I can form a rock band.

I took up piano when my daughter started taking lessons. I'm nothing special, but I can play lotsa stuff from pop to classical. Ended up taking up guitar when my son figured it was too tough. Now I'm on my 3rd amp. the guitar is a little easier to take on the road than the piano...
