What about drafting the same positions as were drafted only perhaps better players?
So we still take a LB round 1, still take a S round 2, etc...

1979 the Chiefs were coming off another disappointing season at 4-12. They finished 24th in scoring offense and 22nd in points allowed. It was clear that the Mike Livingston era was not a success. The QB was drafted 10 years earlier from SMU and made the heir to Len Dawson never caught on.
They did still have some talent in Gary Barbaro, Gary Spani and Art Still on defense, but several holes in the line and linebacking corps. They also lacked a receiving corps as running backs were their top receivers in the previous year. Coach Marv Levy would need some help in many places in his second year at the helm.

That might be difficult to go with as there were trades for players and there might not be a better solution later in that same round.

Just draft a QB and see what happens.

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet Junebug skipping like a stone With the headlights pointed at the dawn We were sure we'd never see an end to it all And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know Just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below Double cross the vacant and the bored They're not sure just what we have in store Morphine city slipping dues down to see That we don't even care as restless as we are We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts And poured cement, lamented and assured To the lights and towns below Faster than the speed of sound Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope Justine never knew the rules, Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls No apologies ever need be made, I know you better than you fake it To see that we don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below The street heats the urgency of now As you see there's no one around

Nah. Too small and doesn't have a big arm. Dan Manucci is a much better prospect.

I think you should limit the redraft to letting them pick someone who went in the subsequent five picks or so. It's probably unrealistic to assume that the Chiefs would reach two rounds down to draft Montana in the first round, for example. But if you look at the five picks behind their pick, those are probably reasonable candidates who were on their draft board.
Heh. The next five picks in the first round after Steve Fuller were: 24 24 Jon Giesler Dolphins T Michigan 25 25 Rick Sanford Patriots DB South Carolina 26 26 Kent Hill Rams T Georgia Tech 27 27 Robert Shaw Cowboys C Tennessee 28 28 Greg Hawthorne Steelers RB Baylor I think Kent Hill was pretty good (edit: just looked him up and he was a five-time pro bowler), but I've never heard of these other guys. Maybe Fuller wasn't that bad a pick given the environment.
