Mock (1/28)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs extend Alex Smith 4 years, $60m ($36m guaranteed), and OLB Justin Houston 6 years, $62m ($32m guaranteed).

2. The Chiefs restructure SS Eric Berry and OLB Tamba Hali.

3. The Chiefs resign WR Dexter McCluster to a 4 year, $14m deal ($4m guaranteed), OG Geoff Schwartz to a 2 year, $7m deal, DE Tyson Jackson to a 4 year, $19m deal ($8m guaranteed) and S Husain Abdullah to a 2 year, $6m deal.

3. The Chiefs resign NT Jerrell Powe, ILB Akeem Jordan, and LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

4. The Chiefs let walk: WR Kyle Williams, OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, OLB Frank Zombo, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quinten Demps

5. The Chiefs cut: CB Dunta Robinson

6. Chiefs sign OT Khalif Barnes (Raiders) to a 1 year, $3m deal, S Bradley McDougald (Buccaneers) to a minimal deal.

On with the show:

1.23. WR Odell Beckham Jr., LSU

Beckham is looking more and more like a first round talent. His fantastic, shifty speed and fast route-running, along with his ridiculous big hands and athleticism make him a great fit in a quick-hit offense with Alex Smith making fast decisions. LSU has churned out all kinds of great WR talent in the first round, not the least of which is our very own Bowe.

3.87. CB Lamarcus Joyner, Florida State

As the Chiefs possibly prepare for life after Brandon Flowers in the near future, the undersized but overtalented Joyner looks like a natural replacement. Joyner was part of that elite Seminole secondary and has the look of a natural lockdown talent in the difficult slot CB position. He is also an outstanding blitzer.

4.119. RB Rajion Neal, Tennessee

Neal is a true bellcow that you can unearth in the midrounds. He's got to be a national leader in yards after contact, and possesses a great combination of drive and great leg-power in piles, which combines well with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.

5.151. DE/OLB Chris Smith, Arkansas

Smith doesn't look the part of a typical 3-4 OLB, as he's a bit short and heavy for the slot. However, if the relatively unathletic Hali can make it in this defense as a guy who rushes upfield 70% of the time, Smith is a natural heir to that particular skillset. His odd measurables will drop him a round or two lower than he should be, making him a valuable get in the midrounds. Smith was a key reason why the Razorbacks had a feared passrushing tandem.

6.177. OLB Ronald Powell, Florida

Powell was a former #1 overall recruit to Florida before ACL injury sidelined him. He looked fairly good last year, but he just didn't look the same. Sometimes it takes more than a year to overcome an ACL injury however (see: Berry, Eric), and if he tests out okay, the Chiefs might roll the dice on Powell's talent late in the draft. Whereas Chris Smith short-ish, squatty frame is more of a Hali-role rusher on this team, Powell's tall, lean frame is more indicative of a Houston role.

6.183. S Christian Bryant, Ohio State

Bryant has been an incredibly emotional leader for OSU over the past couple of years. He's coming off a broken ankle, but his emotional leadership from the free safety position gives the Chiefs another option to try to upgrade the position between Bryant, Abdullah, and Commings. When healthy, Bryant is incredibly fast (4.4 speed) and can play SS and NCB if need be.

I like Beckham but it depends on what is available at that pick. It's highly unlikely that he would be the BPA, even at his own position, at pick 23.

I like Lee, Watkins, Evans, Benjamin, and Robinson ahead of him. Beckham still does have a lot of potential and could be a #1 WR, I like him but not at 23 mainly because there will likely be a higher rated defensive prospect available in that slot and defense is what the Chiefs really lacked. The WR class is so deep that you can still find someone with very good potential in the 3rd round as well. Also, the only rookie WR to ever make a big impact in their rookie year with Andy Reid was Desean Jackson; his system is too complicated for most rookies to immediately come in and contribute right off the bat.
