Mock (2/1)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs extend Alex Smith 4 years, $60m ($36m guaranteed), and OLB Justin Houston 6 years, $62m ($32m guaranteed).

2. The Chiefs restructure SS Eric Berry and OLB Tamba Hali.

3. The Chiefs resign OG Geoff Schwartz to a 2 year, $7m deal, and DE Tyson Jackson to a $4 year, 19m deal ($5m guaranteed).

3. The Chiefs re-sign NT Jerrell Powe, ILB Akeem Jordan, and LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

4. The Chiefs let walk: WR Dexter McCluster, WR Kyle Williams, OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, OLB Frank Zombo, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quinten Demps, S Husain Abdullah

5. The Chiefs cut: WR Donnie Avery, TE Anthony Fasano, CB Dunta Robinson

6. Chiefs sign WR Golden Tate to a 5-year, $28m deal ($8m guaranteed), WR Devin Hester (Bears) to a 2-year, $3m deal, OT Khalif Barnes (Raiders) to a 1 year, $3m deal, S Chris Clemons (Dolphins) to a 4-year, $28m deal ($10m guaranteed), and S Bradley McDougald (Buccaneers) to a minimal deal.

On with the show:

1.23. TE Jace Amaro, Texas Tech

The Chiefs have improved themselves across the board at every position except, arguably, punt-returner, and tight end. The Chiefs believe they can compete for a Super Bowl appearance in 2014, so they need another weapon for Smith. Fasano was a cap casualty, and nobody knows where Kelce is. The Chiefs bring in a home run talent in Amaro, whose hands and route-running make him a Day One starter. The obvious hope is that both he and Kelce can log serious time.

3.87. OLB Marcus Smith, Louisville

Smith is as pure a 3-4 OLB as you're going to find in this draft. His passrushing speed is excellent, though he will need to develop his moves. And his work in coverage is outstanding. He is an enthusiastic run blocker, and would help the Chiefs in planning for the post-Hali era.

4.119. NT Daniel McCullers, Tennessee

The Chiefs believe they need to play Poe 60% of the time instead of 90%. They went a long way towards helping him out by bringing back Powe this offseason, but they need more options. McCullers brings serious size and one-dimensional lane-clogging talents. The Chiefs hope this fortifies the middle of their line for years.

5.151. RB Devonta Freedman, Florida State

Just got done bragging on this guy in the "next Jamaal Charles" thread, so let's go with him here. Freedman possesses excellent speed and shiftiness to provide the Chiefs with a great #2 option should Knile Davis be unable to go next year. Even if Davis does, Freedman is a great investment for the post-Charles era, and I believe he is a future 1,000 yard rusher.

6.177. CB Aaron Colvin, Oklahoma

If the Chiefs get another bad year from Flowers and Smith at CB, they will need tons of options for 2015. Colvin will need a year on IR, but was second-day talent before he blew out an ACL.

6.183. CB Walt Aikens, Liberty

The Chiefs take a project for their secondary. Aikens has good size and outstanding speed, projected in the 4.4 range. If that's the case, there's no way he doesn't end up on Dorsey's radar, and gives the Chiefs some athleticism while they await Colvin's return.
