Mythbusters

Anyone still hooked on this show like me? News dropped tonight that Kari, Grant, and Tory are out after this season - quite the bombshell.

http://www.nerdist.com/2014/08/grant...e-mythbusters/

At the same time, I've felt like the show's really been missing something the past few years, so I'm excited to see it get back to watching Jamie and Adam build cool stuff.

For me, it's like the MLB season, content overload.

They've done several cool things, but they've so much time on basic physics in excruciating [for someone who already understands the problem] detail, with SO MANY EPISODES.

I appreciate their geekery, but it doesn't present enough new information per hour to warrant destination TV for me.

I still like it, but it's gotten to feel...off...the last few years. I always loved seeing how they really think about the problem, design an experiment around it, and execute it. Lately, it's just been problem --> results --> explosions. My hope is that it'll regain some of what it had in the early days if they slow it down a bit and get back to just the two main guys.

Mythbusters for me has been like the rest of Discovery. Started out smart and fun then just morphed into some bullshit infotainment, lets blow shit up. This season was suppose to be "getting back to its roots," but it was pretty much the same bullshit.

A perfect example this season was the gun powder in the vacuum myth. They ran the vacuums for 5 seconds and were like "no explosion, lets get the C4." They didnt try overheating them or commercial kind where debris goes through the motor. It was nothing but lets get to the explosion.

At this point, I would not mind if the show was cancelled outright. The build team has always been the weak link in the show, so this is addition by subtraction.

Also, I should note that if you hate what the mythbusters have become, there is a subreddit called /r/smyths where they make fan edited episodes that remove all the fluff. Usually they take a good 15 minutes off the episode and is a lot more fun to watch.

I like some of it, but like some of the episodes purposely don't explore some of the possibilities out there that would prove it true. Specifically, I am thinking of the episode about if it was possible to avoid a cop from detecting your speed / jam / or make your car invisible to guns.

I'll preface by saying that it's technically not completely possible to *legally* prevent a speed reading 100%, but there are setups to make it so that a measurement can't be locked in by the gun until you are about 800 to 1000 ft from the cop, and by then you will have been alerted long before and able to slow down easily.

As for instant on technology, there are ways that are completely legal to completely jam up the gun from getting a reading. In fact, depending on the setup, you can legally overpower most laser guns to the point where it will cause the gun to power cycle and go through its initial startup sequence.

Of course, they had a law enforcement agency helping then by use of their different types of guns, so I'm sure that created a bit of a conflict of interest. Otherwise, I'd suspect that policing agency wouldn't be willing to participate.

I know it's a minor thing, and as knit picky as it is, but the interest for me and I would guess others lies in the fact that they are supposed to be taking an objective and scientific method of experimentation and testing to reach a relatively valid conclusion that is soundly based on the evidence.

It's still a fun show, but I can agree with others that it's sort of dumbed itself down. Maybe the shakeup with the principal cast will see a return to its early day roots?

That's my hope. Or if nothing else, hopefully the show won't seem so trite if they focus on more of the process than the result.

Funny that I just so happened to catch that episode. I haven't watched the show in a year or so. It's kinda weird how they announced it at the end as a "oh by the way" type of news. You'd think they'd know it's kind of a big deal and at least spend some time on it or doing a show dedicated to them or something. But nope, 5 second announcement at the very end.

I would murder a good person for an evening of consensual sex with Kari Byron.

That episode did suck. They know there is ways of doing it but they definitely didn't push the issue.

Kari Byron is at the top of my Hall Pass list.

That being said, I think the show worked better when the trio just helped out on the myths. Once they split up it gave the show a weird feel. But removing them altogether was not the answer. Unless, of course, they hire hot new female interns.
