Need some help...wood working manufactures.

I want to have somebody make some Christmas Stars for me. I have a cool template, but I am not skilled enough or have the ability to mass produce them.

I would like to have them made in the US. I am up against a timeline for Christmas orders.

I'll probably market them on E-Bay or other suggestions.

But I need someone to make them.

Ideas?

I used to be an Ops Manager for a millwork shop so here's some guidance/questions..

Depends on what you need to have done...

Can it be a glued blank or does it have to come from full lumber? That will affect price big time. What thickness? Is it coming from 4/4, 6/4, 8/4? Availability of lumber? 4/4 is ez, but if you want something from say, 8/4 hard maple, then you're going to be either waiting or paying a pretty penny. What species of lumber? Affects price greatly. Are you planning to stain? Some species take stain better than others and more consistently. For instance, hard maple is better than soft maple. You're entering into winter cut season and its more expensive than summer cuts because the wood is cleaner/whiter.

Is this a CNC router required deal? Assuming Yes. Gotta find a millwork shop that has one because not all do and many smaller shops do not.

You are putting a shop against a tough timeline already, better get on the phone stat. They have to get lumber, process it, machine it, get your approval on the blank, and then mass produce. In less than 30 days.

Any shop worth a shit isn't going to take on large volume with that short of lead time.

Yup. He pretty much has to find a small shop, I"m assuming with a CNC. That's going to be a tough gig. Most big shops are bogged down with dimension products or are in a specific market (flooring/trim, etc).

It is fairly simple. 3/4" wide, 1/4" thick pine trim strips, sized 14", 11.5", 9", 6" long x 12 pieces for one star. Make a triangle with 3 14" pieces. Do another 90 degrees out of phase and put it on top of the first = David Star. Do the same with the 11.5" and stack on top of the 14" star. Rinse and repeat for the other lengths. You end up with a pyramid of stacked stars. That completes one side. Do another side and put them together with a light inside. The pieces can be glued or brass screwed at each intersection.

I understand the time line. I should have been looking 6 months ago. I would like to make 200 or so. If I can find one place, then I can ask for another etc. I tried googling but came up with very little and I have no background to know what to search for.

You might be able to get a dimension shop to do a quick run on a late shift of those, but you're asking for a pimple on a bulls ass here in the grand scheme of things. Nothing a guy with a home planer, table saw, and miter couldn't whack out on a Saturday.

Best thing I can tell you is try a small place like Kimmi's in Everest or something. Maybe they could at least rip and surface the strips for you and you can cut to length yourself.

Understand. I am finishing one now. I think it is super cool. The light plays out in between the gaps in the wood. The shadows are crazy as well.

Dang, you about Kimi's and Everest...wow. I bought the trim at Home Depot. It takes 4-5 8' sticks to make one. The trim is finished and perfect size. I'll try and post a pic.
