Bad news for Chiefs is not the loss but the way they're playing

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The bad news for the Kansas City Chiefs is not so much Sunday’s home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though the 19-17 defeat is one they well could look back on at the end of season with regret.

Still, the Chiefs have time to overcome the blemish. When they face the Broncos in Denver next Sunday night, they begin a stretch of the schedule that includes four games against AFC West opponents.

The true disappointment for the Chiefs is the way they’re playing. It will be difficult, if not impossible, against this upcoming schedule for the Chiefs to win the division with a largely unproductive offense and a defense that’s had little success getting its opponents off the field.

The Chiefs broke through against the Bucs for an offensive touchdown, their first in two weeks. But they managed just two TDs despite having the ball inside the Tampa Bay 10-yard line on two other occasions. Once they had to settle for a field goal.

On the other, in the fourth quarter with the Chiefs trailing by two points, Alex Smith threw a pass intended for a well-covered Chris Conley that was intercepted.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, allowed the Bucs to have the ball for more than half of the game. Kansas City’s third-down defense was dreadful. The Bucs converted on 69 percent of their third-down plays. The two previous opponents, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Carolina Panthers, had similar success in moving the ball on the Chiefs.

That’s why the challenge presented by the Broncos next week and the Falcons in Atlanta the week after looks so daunting. The Broncos, who had the NFL’s fifth-best defense heading into this week’s games, figure to strangle a Chiefs offense that hasn’t been in any kind of rhythm since an Oct. 30 game against the Colts.

The Falcons, meanwhile, led the NFL in scoring and were second in yards. Kansas City will need some points to win in Atlanta.

This, indeed, is the Chiefs' predicament. It’s not that they lost to the Bucs but how that dims the outlook for their season.
