Going to Big Island Hawaii next week. Any fav spots or suggestions?

We are also going "kick the tires" house/condo shopping. Wifey loves downtown Kona. I prefer Parker Ranch or the south tip. Where would you live??

Any good eating spots?

Scuba diving?

Snorkeling?

Is the observatory worth the long drive?

THANKS!

Hawaii is the only place I have ever done a helicopter tour. Did one with my dad on the big island back in around 1987, over live volcano lava flow. VERY awesome and memorable.

Also did one of the valleys and general beauty of Kauai on my honeymoon years later. Also pretty damn awesome.

(Waipi'o Valley Lookout) Pololu Valley is really cool, but a scary drive down too it.
Observatory is pretty cool. Half way up, you have to stop at a rest area, and it has some really neat historical info about making the observatory.

I have been to the restaurant at the Kilauea Lodge a couple of times, but that was many years ago. If it's still getting good reviews, it would be a nice place to spend an evening.

I was born and raised in Hawaii and am also half Hawaiian, by blood, so I got you...

Walk around shirtless and stare the locals directly in the eyes. Scream "White Power" for extra funzies.

Find the biggest dude you can. Call him a "mahu" and ask him if he "like boto".

If you're on the road to Volcano National Park and want a nice quaint restaurant to eat at, try cafe ono. https://www.cafeono.net/

Place only sits about 12 people, service is laid back, food is quite good though. Check out the menu first to see if there is something on there you might like

Botanical gardens in Hilo are nice, but I'm not a big fan of Hilo.

Kona side is the best and up north from Kona is beautiful.

Yessir. Do a search for ‘Manta Ray Night Dives’ on the Big Island. Basically a group of snorkelers shines their lights down from the surface and the divers 10m deep shine their lights up. This attracts plankton which then attracts the Mantas. When I did it, there were eight of them doing continuous barrel rolls/loops for a solid 30 minutes as they skimmed right up against you. I’ve had a lot of great diving experiences in my life but this was really unique. You can find tons of YouTube videos to get a feel for it.
