RIP Greg Hall
He used to write the "Off the Couch" media column for the Star (IIRC the first KC sports media criticism) which later moved to the Platte County paper. This was back in the 90s and early 2000s. Greg pulled no punches. I thought he was often devastatingly funny, as well as on point. I remember when he gave it up to concentrate on work, I emailed him to say how much I missed the column and hoped he would reconsider. He sent a very generous response. I've followed him on Twitter in recent years, but he mostly promoted local high school cross country.

Was he the dude who wrote that scathing article about Nick Wright over a decade ago? Exposed how Nick's dad hated him and stuff?

Off The Couch was quality reading. The commentary on the ridiculousness of local media in KC was always interesting.

Aww, man. Very sad to see. When I lived in San Diego I actually wrote some "Off the Couch - San Diego Edition" columns for his blog as a volunteer. Had been a fan of his work for a long time, so when I saw him looking for other cities I signed up.
Always a great guy to interact with. He would suggest edits in a respectful way and provide great feedback. Not surprising as talented as he was. Hate to see this. |

I had to read Off the Couch. Loved when he’d go after Whitlock & Keitzman.

Damn that sucks. A couple of weeks ago I was trying to see if he was still writing OTC because I always enjoyed it during the heyday of sports talk in KC.

This is absolutely brutal news.
Most of you guys probably know Greg from his work in the Star. But as a high school cross country and track athlete, to me, he was the guy who showed up to all the big meets to capture it all with his camera. He was a champion for high school sports across the state of Missouri, especially running, and every time he showed up, it made the meet feel that much bigger. All in all, a terrible loss on so many levels. Not just for KC, but for the entire state. RIP Greg. You will be sorely missed. |

In 1999 a group of us hosted a friends birthday in the new Royals OF party pavilion. (It’s gone now obv). We invited Greg Hall to come for free since our friend loved SportsWaves. Greg agreed, came out, surprised our buddy, and we all had a blast.
He was a good dude, stood his ground against assholes too. I wish his family well and this is one time I’ll def say: Rest In Peace Buddy. |
