The potential silver lining of a 17-game schedule...

https://www.nfl.com/news/which-notab...tes-to-make-hi

Which notable NFL records could fall in 17-game season? Top candidates to make history?

Excerpt:

Quote:
Passing touchdowns: 55 (Peyton Manning, 2013)

Another record set during Manning's historic 2013 campaign was the single-season passing-touchdowns mark. In the history of the NFL, there have only been three instances of a player reaching 50 scoring strikes: Manning in 2013, Patrick Mahomes in 2018 and Tom Brady in 2007 (Mahomes and Brady both had exactly 50 passing touchdowns). The closest any player got in 2020 was Aaron Rodgers, who threw 48 passing touchdowns en route to his third MVP. But even with a 17th game, Rodgers' pace would have put him at 51 touchdowns. In fact, Rodgers would have needed to play 19 regular-season games at his pace of 3.0 touchdowns per game to break Manning's record.
So, who is primed to pass 55? If anyone is "likely" to break an unlikely record, it's Mahomes. The 2018 NFL MVP has done nothing but set records: fastest to 100 touchdown passes, tied for most touchdown passes in his first 50 games played (despite only playing in 46), only player under age 30 with 50-plus pass touchdowns in a single season ... You get the point.

Mahomes -- who is coming off one of his worst career games in Super Bowl LV, the only NFL game he has started where the offense did not score a touchdown -- has reasons to be optimistic for this coming season. The Chiefs paid a premium to sign former Patriots guard Joe Thuney to a five-year, $80 million deal (a record average per year of $16 million for interior offensive linemen) and added former Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long (who took 2020 off to get healthy). In Super Bowl LV, Mahomes was pressured 16 times when the Buccaneers sent four-or-fewer pass rushers, tied for the second-most such pressures he's faced in a game in his career, according to Next Gen Stats. His 497 yards traveled before throwing the ball or being sacked in that game were the most scramble yards by any QB in a game in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2016). The Chiefs released starting tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz, who both missed Super Bowl LV due to injury, this offseason. While the tackle position is still a big question mark for KC, the offensive line is in a better position than it was for the Super Bowl, with Thuney and Long inside.
So, improved pass protection is one reason for Mahomes being primed to break Manning's touchdowns record. Another? He plays the AFC North this season. While that may seem counterintuitive, as the AFC North features the Steelers and Ravens (two of the top-three scoring defenses last season), here's why it's a positive for Mahomes: In six career regular-season games vs. the AFC North, Mahomes has thrown for 22 touchdowns (against just three interceptions) and 2,195 yards (365.8 yards per game). He is 6-0 in those games. Mahomes' average of 3.7 touchdown passes per game against the AFC North is the highest by any QB vs. a single division since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger (minimum two such games).

If Mahomes' average of 3.7 pass touchdowns per game against the AFC North holds up, he should throw for 14 touchdowns over those four games this season (rounding down from 14.8). That'd leave him needing 42 touchdowns over his other 13 games to set the record (just over 3.2 touchdowns per game). While averaging 3.2 touchdowns per game is by no means an easy task, Mahomes' career average of 2.5 pass touchdowns per game is the highest in NFL history (next highest: Rodgers' 2.1 pass touchdowns per game). At worst, he has a shot.
Yep. Mahomes has a chance to erase a couple of Manning's records. Suck it, FiveHead.

Ugh. No. This isn't a silver lining. If he breaks the record, it'll be done with an asterisk.

Another reason to hate 17 games.

If 15 threw 56 it would be the record for a 17 game schedule (I wouldn't really call it breaking the record, it would be a different record). I suppose we still compare stats back to when there were 14 games, but whatever.

Wish they would just leave it like it is!!!

There's no asterisk next to Manning's records, even though the guys that set those records before him only played 14 games.

Sure, at the time (1978), everybody was saying the same thing you are. That sentiment simply faded away with time and that will happen here too.

Forget how you feel about it right now. 25 years from now, Mahomes having these records instead of Manning will have plenty of meaning to young Chiefs fans.

They absolutely do compare stats. There's no "14-game" record or "16-game" record. Just a record.

And that won't change with 17 games. Whoever breaks these records will be the official record holder. Is that fair to guys like Peyton Manning? Nope. But it wasn't fair to Joe Namath or Dan Fouts when Manning broke their records, not only playing 2 more games, but playing against defenses that were no longer allowed to make contact.

It will be awesome to see Mahomes name on records moving forward, but unfortunately twistedchief is right. There will probably be someone who passes Patrick decades from now due to this type of expansion.

Dan Marino’s 1984 season will stand the test of time. It’s the most impressive season by a QB in NFL history

If somebody else passes Patrick in time, how is he right?

It's the organic growth of the game.

Do we still lament the fact that Joe Namath's 4,000 yard season isn't even top 25 anymore, let alone the best season ever?

Time marches on, my friend. Time marches on.

The more escalades Mahomes can get, the better. I'll be dead when somebody passes him.

There are no positives to a 17 game schedule, IMO. I love football and I love the Chiefs, but I didn't really want to see any of these guys in Week 16, either.

This.

A longer season just means a bigger chance of injuries. We're already adding a playoff game - and I wasn't a fan of only 1 bye either.

Cutting 2 preseason games means nothing because your starters aren't really playing anyway...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I don't care either way. I just wanted to see KC play in a SB before I died. I watched 32 years go by without ever being close. Before Pat not seeing one in my lifetime was a legitimate possibility.

I got to see us go, win, and enjoyed a tight game with a dramatic come back.

I'm not going to pretend I care about 5th string WR or 4th string HB like I use to. I don't feel like every single signing has the utmost importance.

I can let go.

I just enjoy the game now...

I think htismaqe is right that the way football is set up it's just the evolution of the game in some ways.

The only thing I think will be weird is the 2000 yard rusher. That's just an iconic number and that 17th game might be the one that makes 2000 yard rushers happen more often, but time will tell. The fact that there's so much RBBC these days might offset that.

I don't know. That seems like part of the evolution of the game as well.

6 of the 8 guys that broke the 2000-yard mark did so in the last 25 years. Only 2 in the 25 years before that.

It's quite common for the Chiefs to sit starters on the last game of the year.

Manning played all 16 games to get to that 55 TD mark.

Essentially, it just levels the playing field. Whereas before Mahomes had to do it in 15 games, now he gets the same number of games that Manning had.
