Report: Rams drafting Michael Sam was part of deal with NFL

A new report alleges that Michael Sam was drafted by the Rams after a deal was made with the NFL so the team wouldn't be asked to participate on HBO's "Hard Knocks." Rams coach Jeff Fisher denied any deal was Read Full Caption

The drafting of Michael Sam, the first openly gay active player in NFL history, reportedly was part of a deal concocted with the league, according to a new report.

Longtime NFL insider Howard Balzer, in a report on the website for St. Louis sports radio station 590 The Fan, alleged that the league agreed not to ask the then-St. Louis Rams to appear on the HBO series "Hard Knocks" if they picked Sam in the 2014 draft.

Sam, a Hitchcock native who was the 2013 SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year at Missouri, was taken in the seventh round with the 249th overall pick (out of 256).

According to Balzer, with the growing likelihood that Sam wouldn't be drafted, "it is believed the NFL didn't want to face questions about that eventuality, and the Rams were viewed as the ideal spot because of St. Louis' proximity to the Missouri campus in Columbia, 90 miles away, and head coach Jeff Fisher's ability to deal with whatever distractions there might be."

Balzer also speculated that the league may have urged teams not to draft defensive end Ethan Westbrooks so the Rams could sign him as an undrafted free agent after drafting Sam.

Fisher, meanwhile, said there was no discussion with the league and blasted the report in an appearance on ESPN Radio on Thursday morning, calling it "100 percent incorrect."

"I was really taken aback by those comments," Fisher said. "It's insulting, from my standpoint, as it relates to Michael. We had three seventh-round picks. When we drafted Michael he was the best player on the board. Who in their right mind would think that you give up a draft choice to avoid doing something like that?

"It's really unfair to Michael. Michael worked so hard. It's really not fair to Michael because of all the hard work he put in."

As for Sam, he responded with this cryptic tweet Thursday:

Sam never made it with the Rams, as he was waived before the 2014 season. He then landed on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad but never played in a game. Sam then retired from football last summer after a brief stint with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes that saw him get no game action.

The Rams, who moved back to to Los Angeles this past offseason, were announced as the team that will be featured on this year's version of "Hard Knocks," the annual series which chronicles a team's training camp.toR

If this is true, it's a really big deal. It would mean that the league office is getting involved in teams' draft picks. We already know that Goodell tried to steer at least one free agent away from a small market team from that report a few years back, and now if it turns out that they're blackmailing teams into specific draft picks?

I'd like to learn more about the story, but this is huge if it's true. Seventh-round pick or not, it would be a jagged cut across the already battered integrity of the modern NFL.

Moving a little too far into conspiracy land now. And Michael Sam, the perpetual victim, has already commented on the subject, "Wouldn't doubt it".

Yeah, I'm not sure how you get 31 teams to agree not to draft a guy. Wouldn't Westbrooks consider it odd when he wasn't getting offers from the other 31 teams to sign as an UDFA?

It's a pretty good lawsuit by Westbrooks if they find proof of it.

I can't remember the player, but I remember the story. He was talking to Goodell and mentioned that he was considering an offer from some smaller market team like the Bills or the Bengals. Goodell said something like, "Why are you doing that? A player like you should be playing in New York." It caused a bit of a tumult with the team's owner saying publicly that Goodell shouldn't be advising players against signing with small-market teams.

It seems like it was a linebacker or defensive back, but I don't remember. It was probably six or seven years ago.

Stuff like this doesnt surprise me and doesnt bother me at all. Its called real life. We like to think that corporations and governments are beyond the dealings and arrangements us regular folk encounter and make,

They're not

NFL 1 in the later rds of the draft: @#$%, If Sam doesnt get picked were going to have a pr backlash. Thats the last thing we need right now. The SEC co defensive player of the year not even drafted?

NFL 2 : The teams Ive talked to arent even interested. They say the risk isnt worth the reward. Nobody even grades him that high to begin with, but I agree somebody needs to draft him so we dont have to deal with that $h!T.

NFL 1: Sigh... ..Ha,ha. Call Fisher, tell him if they use their last pick on Sam we'll remove them from consideration for "Hard Knocks. %$#@, Im so done with his constant b!tch!ing about being chosen for that.

20 min later

NFL 2: We're good hes going to do it.

NFL 1: Well, dO you mind calling Arthur later this week and tell him Atlanta was chosen as the best fit for Hard Knocks this season.

NFL 2: not a problem

I believed it to be a stunt as soon as it happened. They had like 11 draft picks that year and drafted him second to last as a disposable joke.
