Hypothetical: You versus a young Patrick Mahomes II.

Assume that you're an average athlete who played football in high school. You were a cornerback who became a starter your senior year, but never made any all-district teams or other honors. You never got any college offers, so your career ended after high school. Your teammates generally viewed you as an okay player.

Which of the following scenarios would you prefer?

A. You never played against a kid who became a pro football player.

B. You played one game against a future pro. High school quarterback Patrick Mahomes II absolutely torched you. You were playing man coverage all game, and the receiver you were covering got 325 yards and 5 touchdowns before the opposing coach stopped passing at the end of the third quarter and ran the clock out. But you get a story to tell the rest of your life if you choose to tell it.

Assume that the stats are available online so you can't lie about the game.

It would be tempting to laugh about Patrick Mahomes II destroying me, but I know myself. I would see that game for the rest of my life. I'll just stick to playing against regular high school kids, so as I'm older I can sincerely say, "I was a decent football player. If I had played against stronger competition it might have won me a scholarship or something."

One scenario is far more interesting than the other. I’ll take getting torched all day long.

No offense, but I don't see you beating him three times. Recall that this is Patrick Mahomes II we're talking about.

My bad, but I was actually making fun of the Bengals for all they have is beating Mahomes 3 times in one year but probably never beat him again.

Play against Mahomes! The way I'd explain it is the wr would have got 400yrds and 7 tds if I hadn't been covering him. And I'd damn sure remember it that way.

Definitely play against Mahomes. I've already long-conceded that he is better at football than I am by a lot. It's actually one of the things I like most about him.

I know a few people who wrestled Dan Gable, and they seem to enjoy reminiscing about how quickly it was over for them in a match. One of them loves telling this story of when he walked-on at Iowa towards the end of Gable's coaching career in the mid-1990s, and was wrestling if not the heaviest weight something up there (and Gable wrestled at maybe 150lbs at his heaviest) and he sees this old, scrawny, kind of nerdy-looking guy walking with a limp, and thought, "That's Gable? I can take him." So he challenges Gable and to no one's surprise but the new kid, was pinned by the old man in seconds.

Some of my favorite memories were getting absolutely destroyed by guys who were incredible players. They weren't my favorite at the time, but they're fun to remember now.

So one time I was at the Rec hall playing pick up basketball in spring and a couple of guards from the Kansas team showed up...

It went about like you would expect...

I was a lineman and don't know how DBs feel, but I would think they would mainly feel responsible for covering the receiver. If the QB makes great passes that only the receiver can get, that is just one of those things outside the defender's control.

Back to the main issue, though, I don't mind a great athlete beating me. There are sometimes much faster, stronger, or skilled players out there. I remember a game where in the first series the DL I was blocking lifted me up and rotated me 90 degrees, moving my like a hour hand from noon to 3. I thought it was hilarious. I actually did ok against him the rest of the game by staying low and blocking his legs.

Take this scenario and replace Mahomes with Brandon Lloydd and it basically happened to me and my team. (I was playing a bit of Safety, but my passion position was WR.)

The dude freaking torched us and we didn't care. Had to recognize the talent.
