OT in the first round?

I've seen the endless trade up scenarios for an EDGE or WR but none proposing a move to 11 or earlier for an OT if one of the top 3 OT's fell farther than expected.

It might initially seem absurd to think the Chiefs would do this but consider the following:

1. Orlando Brown Jr., as of right now, is set to be a free agent in 2023.
2. Right tackle is a need.....a lesser one than those on the defensive side but a need nonetheless.

Now, let's say any one of Neal, Ekwonu or Cross falls beyond the 9th pick and the Chiefs maneuver up to take him. Would you have a problem with that?

At best, you've got some newfound leverage in OBJ's contract talks and insurance in case they stall or go south.

At worst you've secured the right tackle spot and completely solidfied security of your half-billion-dollar QB for the foreseeable future against a division loading up on pass rushers.

Additionally, the Chiefs can still add a quality EDGE and WR or two later in the draft, especially on Day 2.

Mind you, this isn't to say the Chiefs should or will do this. It's simply to throw another possibility out there - one that I personally haven't seen anywhere - and get you guys' thoughts on it.

Trading up for a tackle, when they have this many other needs, would be madness.

Yeah, NO.

There are way to many other holes on this team to do something like that. Which is why you aren't seeing this anywhere.

I do believe we need to address the RT position and we probably will but more like rounds 3 or 4. Now if a complete stud happened to drop I could see late round 2 but thats not likely.

Orlando IS our LT, I dont know why people dont accept that.

I'd be very much fine with it IF Veach also has a plan to move OBJ in the draft for more capital or as part of the trade capital.

I don't like OBJ in this offense, I've been vocal about that.

For example, I've said before that if Seattle doesn't move up for a QB I think giving them 30 and OBJ for 9 to get Cross would be a nice move IMO. Now, that's not for everyone either. It still leaves the team in dire need of help defensively and takes away ammunition to do that but I do think it helps the team with the long-term financial at the position and a guy that fits the team's passing mentality much, much better.

QB, OL, RB, TE, and ST are the 4 positions we should avoid in the first two rounds of this draft

I’d like a OT/TE in the 3rd or an RB in the 4th, but no sooner

We have too many needs on the defensive side of the ball

Standing pat at 29 and taking a tackle, eh if someone falls into the Chiefs lap like that I don't mind it. But OP says trade up to take a tackle, to me that would be like wondering if you're due a haircut while you're currently on fire.

This scenario doesn't seem that far fetched to be honest.

Flipping OBJ and either 29 or 30 for a top 12 pick (and some additional capital most likely) and taking either Ewkonu or Cross (Hard to envision Neal being there) - effectively giving the Chiefs another 4 or 5 years before it's time to pay +$140 mil in top LT money again.

Main issue with this, however, is Reid. I don't see him entrusting Mahomes' blindside to a rookie. That is UNLESS he and Veach are both enamored with one of the top OT's and feel he could step in and be that guy.

Again, this would anger most who are understandably tunnel-focused on the Chiefs going some combo of defense/WR/trade down on Day-1.

However, this is EXACTLY the type of stuff that emerges in the days leading up to the draft as a rumor and/or happens ON draft day, catching everyone off guard.

And the explanation and reasoning for it all would be exactly what we've mentioned here.

I wouldn't love it but I wouldn't hate it if someone fell that shouldn't have and they took one. There would be worse picks and they have a hole at RT.

If we took a tackle in the first and traded down, Chiefs Kingdom would erupt

I’d be ok with Tyler Smith in the first. Pairing him with Smith on the right side could be really good. I like Niang but his injury history just can’t be trusted.

LT is going to cost KC a lot of $$ coming up...they did what they has to do with Fisher getting hurt.

The fact they franchised Brown says they arent ready to commit to him...they could have shaved some cap space this year by signing him. He's serviceable and above average but not worth the money he's going cost...unless he improves this year... which could happen.

Drafting a tackle, if one falls, would be a pretty prudent financial move....like a potential $20 million+ a year pick. Start him at RT for his rookie year...worst case is the Chiefs improve the weakest position on the OL with a cheap contract. Best case ...they trade Brown next year and recoup some draft capital.

They wont move up for one...that could cause some political LR noise.

High money positions are CB/DE/LT/WR...getting one of each, if the player is there, could be how the first 2 rounds might go.

GMs are very aware of current positional costs....
