So he took a lateral move to a team that plays nothing like the Chiefs.

I would imagine that means there wasn't a path for promotion at all for him in KC.

Once he dabbled with going to Washington, he seemed to become an organizational non-entity.

It was strange. The most I heard from Reid was immediately prior to the combine where he said something like "I'm not sure whats going on with Greg..."

He didn't say "but we'd love to have him back" or "we'll keep his seat warm for him while he explores other opportunities..."

It was "I dunno what he's up to..."

I kinda get the feeling that Lewis was not coming back either way. And he took the first team that offered him a lateral position.

That's not at all what I'm saying.

In fact, it's one step completely removed from your comment.

The clear path for Lewis would have been to assume the OC role after Andy retires and Nagy actually becomes HC (in your scenario).

If he's taking another WR coach job somewhere else, it's because he knows that's never going to happen.

These guys want to advance and the primary reason they take lateral moves (like EB and Lewis) is because they realize there's no path to promotion in their current organization.
