Cement Board In Shower

I am working on building a new shower and after I put some cement board up it seems to be a bit flexible. Can anyone take a look at that video in the link and tell me if that is normal? I would think that maybe there might be a slight movement there but that looks a little too flexible for something that is going to have tile on it. Is that normal? Also, the studs are 16" on center.

Can’t help you out with anything technical, but those aren’t your hands, are they?

I just finished our bathroom last year. Same stuff, just as flexible, 16" on center. I've had no issues and the tile is solid. I've actually 'bumped' into it to see just how strong it was. No give at all.

We just finished remodeling our bathroom shower, by spec the walls must be 1/2 cement board. I think all brands are similar in design and strength. The panels are much smaller than drywall…..3’ x 5’. Anyway once you mud the tile and grout it’s more rigid. Don’t forget to waterproof.

Here’s the question, though: are you going to put in a shelf to hold your shower beer?

We just had our 5 year old shower completely gutted
Because all the tile was popping up because the floor "bounced" a little. It broke the waterproofing and leaked into basement. Install company done it all for
Free. It was their fault

1. Is it 1/2" backer board? I think its 1/2" nominal and actually closer to 0.45".
2. Have you screwed everything at 8"oc? (or whatever the manf rec is)
3. Are your studs at 16" oc?
If those three things are true, then youve got nothing to worry about.

Be sure you tape and mud your seams. Feather that shit out so you dont have a collywobbled row of tiles. Dont rush the waterproofing process either.

Many years ago, I used to deal with 3'x5'x1/2" HardieBacker all the time, and it would never bend like that. It would break long before bending that much. Maybe the product has changed since then.

1. Yep, it is 1/2.
2. 8 inches on the screws or less. I also used Liquid Nails on the boards before screwing them to them.
3. The studs are 16" on center..

16" oc is maxium, with the mud/mastic and tile it should stiffen up. I spaced my studs 12" on center just in case, but you should be fine.

He's using cement board, not hardie. I prefer hardie but to each their own.

You'll be fine. Tape your seams and avoid a grout joint at the seam and it will be fine.

did mine , added extra studs so ended up on 8 in centers, flex is the endgame enemy of tile.
