The Early Years Tournament: Round 4, Heat 3. The Elite Eight.

It was bound to happen at some point. We have two wins over the Ravens going head to head. Wins over the Ravens are so fun!

Chiefs 10-2 / Ravens 7-5

At 4:40 of the highlights, check out the great Tyreek non-scoring play. Speed kills. And speaking of Tyreek, this game is most notable due to a 4th and 9 play with 1:20 left in the game, down 7, do or die, and you know the rest. One of the greatest regular season plays in Chiefs history took place. Damien Williams scored with 53 seconds left to tie it up, and then Justin Houston made a great strip sack and recovery with a few seconds left ... but we missed the field goal as time expired! We pushed the ball downfield on a long overtime drive, with Eric Fisher making a key fumble recovery on a fluke Mahomes fumble (13:10 of the highlights), and Butker atoned for 2 missed field goals by kicking one to take the lead. The defense then made a dramatic stand on the other team's last-gasp drive with a sack by Houston and Ford that put Lamar Jackson out of the game and a couple of great pass breakups by Orlando Scandrick and Kendall Fuller. In the end, the defense held Jackson to only 147 passing yards while Mahomes went for 377. The leading yardage guys were Tyreek (145) and Spencer Ware (129).

Chiefs 2-0 / Ravens 2-0

Mahomes played great, with 374 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, but the story is behind the stats. If you watch the highlights, this is one of his prettiest passing games ever. Everything was on target, threading needles like a sweatshop worker. Hidden behind the scenes is a great game by Ogbah with 1.5 sacks and 4 QB hits. You should also check out the great one-handed touchdown catch by Demarcus Robinson if you don't automatically remember it. The Ravens' offense was potent with over 200 rushing yards, but the Chiefs controlled this game from start to finish to put an end to talk that the Ravens could go toe to toe with them.

This is an interesting one. The 2018 game featured one of the greatest regular season plays ever, one that vaulted Mahomes even higher atop Mount Olympus to long-suffering Chiefs fans. But there were also mistakes in that game. It wasn't a flawless Chiefs day, and we had worries about a limping Tyreek (pre-house fire).

The 2019 game was a somewhat flawless Chiefs day, at least on offense. It was Mahomes crisply destroying a generally strong opponent with no worries on the day. We knew we had that game just by watching Mahomes at work.

I love a great performance, but that 4th and 9 pass was the stuff of legend. I have to go with 2018.

2018.

That 4th and 9 is my all time favorite Mahomes play. Only a handlful of players in history could make that play.
