Run Defense

This will obviously be critical against the Eagles.

What are your thoughts on the run defense and how the Chiefs adjust for Barkley?

Against the Texans:

Mixon had 18 attempts for 88 yards (4.9 per). However, a large chunk of the damage came on 1 drive in the second half. On that drive, he had 7 attempts for 39 yards. Not counting that drive, he had 11 attempts for 49 yards (decently efficient, but not dominant).

Against the Bills:

Cook had 13 attempts for 85 yards (6.5 per). Similar to Mixon, a large piece came on one drive in the second half. On that drive, he had 5 attempts for 45 yards. Not counting that drive, he had 8 attempts for 40 yards (again, efficient but not dominant).

Is this a problem? Or one bad drive against playoff teams?

We will **** this team up.

Their offense is predictable and their passing game flows through a crippled guy with a lower IQ than Lamar. They are ****ed.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I think we'll be able to dedicate more resources to stop the Eagles run game vs the Bills. With the latter you have to account for Cook, Allen running, AND Allen throwing bombs. You just run out of players back there at some point.

Allen and Stroud are much scarier with their arm than Hurts. I think we can sell out to stop the run in a way that we couldn't the last couple weeks.

Exactly.

Hurts is dumb as shit. Shockingly stupid. We throw McDuffie on one guy and double the other. Everyone else jacks up Barkley.

Might not even need a spy the way Hurts is hobbling around.

They have some interior OL problems right now.

In my limited time watching Becton, it seems like he has survived by bullying smaller DTs with his ridiculous size. After watching Pennel stand up Trent Williams, good ****ing luck doing that in the Super Bowl.

Minus the 1 drive, the defense really held Cook in check for the most part.

Allen did little with his legs, so I’m guessing the plan was to really focus on him.

Cook is good, but isn’t Barkley. I assume Spags was fine with him getting his, since he likely wasn’t going to break multiple long runs for TDs anyway.

Pennel rapes souls in the playoffs. He dominates giant men with regularity.

He just can't hold up to a whole season and plays on the Sammie Watkins snap count program.

That's the biggest thing. If Saquon gets 100 but he only averages around 4 YPC to ge there, that's fine. We just can't let him get those 50+ yard runs and I just don't think the rate they've been getting them lately is sustainable either.

That’s going to be the key to winning. If Barkley has a big game, KC’s in trouble. Contain him and not turn over the ball and I like KC’s chances.

I posted in the NFCCG thread that the key against the Eagles is to make them work for it.

No dumb turnovers for short fields. No game breaking big plays.

Limit those and make Hurts go the length of the field. Make him process and continually make the right play.

He’ll eventually take a dumb sack and wreck the drive. Especially with the rush getting their quick due to the interior OL injuries.

Well with Cook, I said we'd have some issues and we did. But that's because we still have to account for Allen.

With the Eagles Hurts doesn't even look remotely like the same player he was two years ago AT ALL.

So I think Spags will come in with a game plan to put it in Hurts hands of course.

But really, the key is the offense. Because if we can get a big lead early, then that itself reduces Barkely in the ground game.

They scored 35 in the last Super Bowl and still lost. Not saying we can afford to surrender 35 points again, but not having Barkley isn't why they lost two years ago. They lost because their defense couldn't stop Mahomes.

Barkley in the passing game is dangerous in the flats. You can't forget about him but you also have Brown, Smith, Goedert taking up attention so he might get lost in the pass defense. Our LBs aren't great at coverage.
