Chief's Draft Record since '82!

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/teams/KC

Interesting stats on the last 22 years of drafts for KC.

since '82 chiefs have had only (3) top 5 picks:

84 Maas (5)
88 Neil Smith (2)
89 Thomas (4)

all of these guys were huge for us!

since '82 chiefs have had only (4) 6 thru 11 top pick positions, all have been busts.

82 Hancock (11)
83 Blackledge (7)
86 Jozwiak (7)
02 Sims (6)

Biggest Steal! '93

the year we had no 1st or 2nd round picks

we picked up Will Shields in the 3rd

Best overall Draft was in '96

we had the 28th pick and we picked up woods, tongue, edwards, and horn respectively! Boy we could use all of these guys right now!

all other notables pickups

'92 carter rd 1 pick 20
'90 grunny rd 2 pick 40, szott rd 7 pick 180
'97 gonzo rd 1 pick 13
'99 tait rd 1 pick 14

Bottomline is top 5 pick is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that we haven't had many the last 20 plus years and the fact that we have had only one really great draft (in '96) is a big factor why we are where we are today!

It's more interesting to me to note that we had three top-five picks in a six-year period back then. Those were dark days.

I still can't believe that we've only had 3 top 5 pick in 20 plus years. talk about bad luck!!!!! I believe there are teams out there today that have had (5) or (6) top 5 picks the last 10 years!

I think the draft is the major problem wioth the Chiefs since DV has been in charge. To cut the crap, we suck on draft day.

We have had 29 draft picks.

8 Have been Defensive Linemen.

The facts: Of those 8, 6 were DTs. Of the 6 DTs, We spent our first picks on 3 of them (Downing, Sims, Siavii) The other three consisted of a 2nd round pick and 2 7th round picks. The 2 DEs were drafted in rounds 6 (Wilkerson) and 4 (Allen).

My thought: We have spent too many picks trying to find the DT we crave. 27% of our draft picks (or 50% of our top draft picks) have been Defensive Linemen. I'm not saying these picks were right or wrong, but investing so hevely in one position has hurt us as an overall team.

the Chiefs have also drafted the following
5 Linebackers
4 Running Backs
5 WR/TE
4 Offensive Linemen
3 Defensive Backs

The part of this that pisses me off is the drafting of 4 running backs, and only 3 DBs (2 of the DBs are safties).

Running backs were drafted using 4th round pick in 2001 (Layne), 5th in 01 (Blaylock), 4th in 02 (Easy), 1st in 03 (Johnson).

The only somewhat high draft pick used on a Cb was our 3rd in 2003 (Battle).

Excellent post... And just to pile on, isn't it just great knowing that of all those draft picks we've spend on D-linemen, We've only had 1 guy really appear to be good player? Allen.

If I remember right, he came out of West Virginia, and was viewed as a "can't miss" pick by most everyone in the NFL. He was viewed as a safe and excellent pick for us at offensive tackle.

Then he showed up.

Honestly, I don't remember him playing at all. He was constantly hurt with little ****ling injuries, and just did nothing. He never really got onto the field, and never signed with anyone else when we cut him. He was one of those mystifying draft busts that can't be explained.

I know we have a total history of drafting like shit, but really all that matters to me is how we have drafted under DV.

We have wasted so many picks.

In the 2001 draft out of 9 picks only three are still on the team (Beisel a 4th, Blaylock a 5th, and Harts a 7th). In 2002 our 2nd round pick Freeman was a total bust and is no longer with us.

Since Lamar really doesn't have much to say come draft day I don't think there's much point in looking at anything Pre-Carl. I can understand looking at HIS record, but why to the past GM?
