Pedro Martinez reached out to the Royals before they signed Sidney Ponson, but KC couldn't afford him. Would Pedro have been a better signing than Horacio Ramirez and Willie Bloomquist? Martinez's friends are telling him his $5MM asking price is unrealistic. Rosenthal says that if Pedro drops it down to $1-2MM, he can probably get the Dodgers and other teams involved.

He looked GREAT in the WBC.

since he is near 40 years old, and he hasn't been healthy and effective in 4 or 5 years, $5 million is pretty unrealistic.

No thanks. His best years are far behind him and he started a steep decline in 2006. As uncertain as the back of our rotation may be, it's far from certain that he would have avoided the bullpen by the end of the year. He is a broken old player looking for one last small payday, and we have better things to spend $5 million on.
