There is still a Rookie Salary Pool in 2010
Rookie salary pool continues in 2010
Posted by Mike Florio on May 2, 2010 10:05 PM ET The folks at NFLLabor.com recently reiterated something that we (and others) explained back in February -- even though the current league year has no salary cap, contracts for first-year players will be governed by a rookie salary pool. The rookie salary pool encompasses the total money available per team to sign draft picks and street free agents. It does not create a wage scale for each player. Future growth of each contract is limited by the first-year pay. (We'd elaborate, but it gets complicated quickly.) The league could have pulled the plug on the rookie salary pool in the uncapped year. But there was absolutely no reason to do so. Though it does nothing to rein in the huge dollars paid to the first eight to 10 players taken, the scuttling of the rookie salary pool would have potentially caused rookie compensation to go haywire. |
