3. The Chiefs resign NT Jerrell Powe, ILB Akeem Jordan, and LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

4. The Chiefs let walk: WR Dexter McCluster, WR Kyle Williams, OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, DE Tyson Jackson, OLB Frank Zombo, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quinten Demps

5. The Chiefs cut: CB Dunta Robinson

6. Chiefs sign WR Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) to a 3 year, $15m deal, DE Antonio Smith (Texans) to a 2 year, $9m deal.

On with the show:

1.23. OT Cyrus Kouandjio, Alabama

There's little doubt the Chiefs will bring in more WR talent this offseason (I have them bringing in Maclin here), and there's little doubt the Chiefs will bring in more options at safety. But the biggest question mark on this team is tackle. Donald Stephenson can handle his own, but he's not a world beater. And Eric Fisher is a complete mystery.

Both Dorsey and definitely Reid have demonstrated an affinity for using the 1st rounder for the trenches. The Chiefs have too much of a mystery at the tackle position, and assuming Fisher can put it together, the Chiefs will have options and depth at the most important position on OL. Kouandjio is the perfect kind of Dorsey selection: really good player with ridiculous measurables and sky-high potential.

3.87. OLB Trent Murphy, Stanford

Murphy's racked up 25 sacks the past two years for the Trees, and that's what the Chiefs really, really need more than anything: more people who can and will get to the QB. I'm willing to look past the hangups that Dorsey will surely dislike: Murphy is a decent athlete but nothing special, but he can be used in coverage as well, so perhaps that will assuage some of Dorsey's fears. This team needs more sacks.

4.130. S Deone Bucannon, Washington State

The Chiefs trade down about 11 spots to net an additional 5th rounder.

I think as the talents of Calvin Pryor and Jimmie Ward garner headlines, I think it's possible Bucannon slides -- which is unfortunate. Bucannon is a really impressive candidate to back up Eric Berry. He's the perfect mixture of hard-hitting run support and aggressive man coverage. He's put up unreal tackling numbers the past year for the Cougars, putting up over 100 tackles the past two years, with four interceptions two years ago -- this past year, teams just didn't throw at him as frequently.

5.137. S Jimmie Ward, Northern Illinois

A guy that is just waiting to blast up big boards this offseason. Northern Illinois took college football by surprise this year, and Ward was such a critical part of that ascension. He's been such a locker room presence for four years, and is a special teams ace.

5.151. NT Beau Allen, Wisconsin

Dontari Poe gives this team so much, but among the most important things he gives us is his passrush. To keep him fresh this year, giving him a blow will be necessary on rushing downs. Beau Allen was built to stuff the run -- it's pretty much the one-dimensional role he took on at Wisconsin, which he was phenomenal at. I love Jerrell Powe, but I don't think this coaching staff is for reasons that pass understanding...

6.177. CB Rashaad Reynolds, Oregon State

Rashaad is getting mocked in the 3rd or 4th round right now, but I think he's going to fall because of his unimpressive size (5'11", 187 lbs) and measurables. Nonetheless, there's no denying he's been an incredibly smart playmaker for the Beavers in his time there, and I think he has starter-potential in the slot.

6.183. ILB Andrew Jackson, Western Kentucky

Prime candidate, I think, to skyrocket in the draft. Carries a huge body for a ILB (6'1", 265 lbs), good speed, but hits like a goddamn truck. Akeem Jordan has played well for this team, but I'm not sure how much faith I have in either of our backup ILBs, James-Michael Johnson or Nico Johnson.

The 3-4 DE talent is pretty thin in this draft, and there's no really anybody you'll find in the 1st that's a real plug-and-play. Even Stephon Tuitt (who I love) is a project.

Too many teams need safeties. Clinton-Dix and Pryor are going to get overdrafted. I like bringing back Abdullah and taking my best swings I can in the midrounds.

As for the TE/WR combo, that's a fair point. I just have a hard time figuring where I'm going to sacrifice snaps if I bring in a WR and Maclin. And that's even assuming we let McCluster go, as I do here.

Bowe, Maclin, Avery, 1st rounder? Whose snaps get cut?

As a Wazzu fan, if you draft Bucannon it would almost be worth it to move Berry to free. Bucannon is an old school thumper who doesn't miss many tackles. He has some mean spiritedness in him that this defense needs.

If they plan on playing Kouandjio at guard, pushing Allen to backup at either OT or OG spot, I like the pick.

And Murphy is a good pick for the third round.

The other picks are uninspired until Jackson in the 7th. He's the definition of a true thumper and does, as Direckshun says, hits like a truck.

Interesting read from Our Lads survey on draft 2005/2007

It’s truly shocking that so much great talent is found in undrafted free agency. A lot of that talent doesn’t walk into rookie camp and take a two-deep spot right away. No, they become good because of coaching, hard-hat determination, and a drive to succeed. Nevertheless, udfas come at a much cheaper price than any pick before the 6th round – they need to be cultivated.
What’s not shocking is the obvious need to find your cornerback, running back, tight end, and wide receiver talent in the first two rounds. For each of those positions, 1st and 2nd round were the rounds with the highest rate of two-deep talent over the last three NFL seasons: 47%, 50%, 37%, and 45% of the two-deep talent at each position, respectively, was acquired in the first two rounds. Those are sizeable numbers not to be ignored. Get talent at CB, RB, TE, and WR early or you’ll be waiting for them to develop into contributors

Good read not sure if the numbers in the chart given have changed since 2005/2007

Surprised looking at the chart you would not draft a OL in the first since most that are playing/ starting 2 deep on most teams can be found UDFA/or later rounds in the draft.
