What I Expect Mock - 2014

Well, another year of draft suspense is almost in the books, so its time to put out my mock of what I actually expect our Chiefs to do on draft day. This is by no means a reflection, necessarily, of what I want to happen, but it is an estimation in my mind of what I expect out of our beloved Chiefs.

As usual, KC heads into the draft with a laundry list of needs and the lot of us screaming for the Chiefs to fix all the problems. While one could hope that were the case, the Chiefs have routinely disappointed me in that regard. What I've learned is that the NFL doesn't see prospects the same way we do, they don't value them nearly the same way, and they seldom draft as we expect they would. More often than not, the NFL's brass has their sights set somewhere a bit further into the future and they most certainly do not draft specifically for need all of the time.

Nobody will love it I'm sure, so without further ado, here goes...

1.023 DL - Ra'Shede Hageman - Minnesota

A physical specimen that, when he's on, can disrupt the front line like few players in this draft. This is a guy that I watched continually reset the line of scrimmage against teams like Michigan. He can absolutely bulldoze guards into the backfield and make plays on the opposite side of the line. The Chiefs lack a true presence at defensive end in a league that now requires their odd front ends to do more than occupy space and stop the run. Hageman offers star potential if he can put the pieces together. Given KC's success in transforming Poe into a beast, I think they could do the same with Hageman. You look at the history of Dorsey and Reid, they have historically taken twice as many defensive lineman as any other position in the opening round of the draft.

3.087 OT - Jack Mewhort - Ohio State

A mean, nasty player that comes to play every day. Mewhort generates a good pop off the snap, can move defensive lineman off the ball, and sets up well in the pass game. I don't see him as a left tackle type because of his footwork, and that's not why I see KC drafting him anyhow when both Fisher and Stephenson can play that spot. Mewhort, I see him as a devastating interior blocker at guard, that you can kick out to right tackle if there is an injury. Mewhort played every spot but center for the Buckeyes and was a very solid talent. These seem to be the type of players Reid covets and Dorsey drafts.

4.124 ILB - Christian Jones - Florida State

There's much I like about Jones, and then some things I don't Waht I do like is that he has a strong pedigree and he seems to play with passion. He's extremely good in coverage, which is a superb trait of linebackers in my book. He's pretty well versed with playing at the line of scrimmage. While I don't always like how he takes on blockers, he's at least used to seeing it and finding ways to make plays. I think this is a guy, with his abilities, that can become a player down the road for a team. He's going to need some strength training, especially in the lower half, and he's going to need some time spent learning some technique in order to be more effective at sorting through the trash and being disruptive from the inside. There is plenty to like here, and the Chiefs have good reason to have put a bead on him.

5.163 CB - Travis Carrie - Ohio

I'm going to speculate the Chiefs have some interest in this kid. He's the classic Dorsey type, where he can get a really good player really cheap. He definitely fits the big and physical defensive back mold that the Chiefs are starting to show. Carrie is a physical player that can play man, zone, press, you name it he can do it. He can play the run as well as any corner in this draft. A supremely underrated prospect in my mind. This is a guy I'd feel comfortable with at corner, but he could also fill the void at single high safety, so I think he's a safer type of pick for KC. The Chiefs interests in a plethora of defensive backs may be smoke early on, but where there is smoke there is also some fire.

6.193 WR - Ryan Grant - Tulane

There is just something about this guy that keeps screaming to me that he's going to end up a steal in this draft. Grant has superb hands, highpoints well, has unbelievable quickness, and sneaky deep speed. I think this is a guy, that in a couple years, teams will ask why they passed on him. When a guy can get open really quickly on short crosses and slants, and has reliable hands, he's going to have some value to a team. Kansas City has shown interest and Grant fits what they need in terms of reliable possession receivers.

6.200 DE - James Davidson - Texas-El Paso

A good player on a bad team might be the best way to describe Davidson. He's got talent, but his stat line isn't going to prove it to you. Davidson is fierce, and extremely active. He was visible against upper competition like Texas A&M, Central Florida, and Wisconsin. Davidson has a great first step and can close on the QB in a hurry. He also stacks against the run very well, doing a great job of sorting through trash and setting the edge. I really love the way this kid plays, and the Chiefs have reportedly met with him. This is a classic, under-the-radar type of pick that Dorsey would make, and I'd be ecstatic to see this kid get a chance.

Obviously I think that Hageman would be a good pick at #23...he has tremendous upside.

I could see the chiefs considering Stephon Tuitt as well. Tuitt ran ~5 sec 40yrd dash at his pro day at 299lbs. He also benched 31x, and has 0.5" longer arms than Hageman (both are over 34"), is younger and more polished and experienced in the 3-4. Really see it like a Fisher vs Joeckel at the DE position where Hageman has the higher upside, while Tuitt is more nfl ready.
