Ten Things About Today's Game Week 5: Convicts 40, KC 32

Ten Things About Today’s Game Week 5: Convicts 40, KC 32

10. Well shit. That’s the first thing I could think of to say this week. I remember last year when we lost to the Texans at home I said that “We probably weren’t going to go undefeated.” Same for this year. The last game this team lost with Mahomes at the switch was on the road last year at Tennessee, and the last time we lost at Arrowhead was when Aaron Rodgers came in and had a near perfect game against Midnight Hour. So we were probably due to lose to a motivated opponent with a QB who had a career day. All I can tell you young Chiefs fans is this: Days like today are why you NEVER discount the Raiders. This is the most disappointing home loss to these guys since Jamarcus Russell beat us. And that guy sucked.

9. We could have sour grapes about the officiating, but today KC just got beat. They just flat out got beat. You can argue that at least nine points were nullified by the refs. The first one when Osemele got called for a mystery hold to wipe away a 58 yard TD bomb to Tyreek just a minute and a half into the game. The Raider lineman basically fell down. Osemele had an extremely bad day as a couple plays later he blew out his knee and was carted off the field. When that TD was called back I thought “gonna be one of those kinds of games” - like the last time the Raiders won when the refs gave Carr five chances to score all on consecutive DPIs. The second called back TD was right before half when Kelce was called for a pick. That’s a 50-50 call, and most times does not get flagged. Made us settle for a tie at halftime instead of taking a four point lead. There was also a clear DPI on another bomb to Hill with about five minutes left in the first half. Abrams grabbed Hill’s arm before the ball arrived; no call. Then a few plays later, Watkins pulls up lame on a non-contact play and limps off the field, done for the day. Anyway, if you count those lost points, that’s eleven -one TD/XPA and a four point swing before half- and there’s your ballgame. But that’s not why we lost.

8. Chunk plays is why we lost. Chuckie and the chunks. One thing that made me totally crazy was the Raiders ran on first down EVERY series until deep into the third quarter. Chiefs started playing the run after halftime, so Chuckie threw in a few first down passes in the second half. But the chunks: 72 yard passing TD to Ruggs; 59 yard passing TD to Agholor. 42 yard pass to Renfrow. 23 yard pass to the frickin Fullback Ingold. How bout run stopping? For the most part, a little better, but they gave up a 43 yard run to Booker. Jacobs had 23 carries and got 77 yards, average of 3.3 per carry. That’s a decent job on him. Conversely, KC had a few chunk plays, all passing: Kelce for 32, Hill for 37, Hardman for 37 and Pringle for 23. Carr put up nearly 500 yards of total offense and 40 burger on Spags. That’s too much for even a guy like Mahomes to overcome every single game. Today it caught up with us.

7. Like I said before, the last time Mahomes lost was in Tennessee on the road. And you can arguably say that was the last time he was outplayed in a QB comparison. Tannehill led the Tits on a game winning drive at the end of that one, and KC has a game ending field goal attempt blocked. The actual head to head QB comparison today was fairly even: Carr had seven more yards passing. Carr threw for three TDs, had one pick and was sacked once. Patrick threw two TDs, had two negated by penalties, ran for a TD, threw one desperation pick with the game getting out of reach in the fourth quarter, and was sacked three times. The big difference was that the Raiders had a pass rush all day. Chiefs did not have hardly any pass rush all day. Raiders won the trench battle on both sides of the ball.

6. Speaking of pass rush: Frank Clark, where are you? One solo tackle today. Jones playing on a sore groin got to Carr once and tipped a throw. K-Pass, nada. Okafor, nada. Missed tackles by Neiman -he must be replaced next year- blown coverage by Ward and Sorensen- only guys who looked like they came to play were Breeland -who got a pick first game back-, Fenton who defended reasonably well, and Hitchens, who played well until he got hurt. The lack of pass rush gave Carr too much time and too many wide open guys. Raiders covered much better than we did, especially in the second half.

5. Fisher and Schwartz both had rough days. Seems like when Osemele went out, we stopped running the ball effectively and Patrick started scrambling the rest of the day because of breakdowns in pass protection. KC only ran 20 times, and six of those were Mahomes running for his life. Raiders ran the ball 35 times, and didn’t punt a single time in the first half. I think our defense was gassed in the fourth quarter on a relatively hot October day. Raiders shut Mahomes out in the third quarter and didn’t give up any second half points until there was only four minutes left in the game.

4. If you want to look at some silver linings, there was a Pringle sighting today. Pringle had a clutch catch to convert a 3rd and 11 before the half. He went in when Watkins went down. Kelce now has 100 straight games with at least one catch. Even with this loss, KC has won nine out of the last eleven games versus the Raiders. Buttkicker hit all his chances today. Breeland came back and played well. And even with giving up nearly 500 yards, we still only lost by one possession and a two point conversion. This Chiefs team can be beat, but you’re not going to blow them out.

3. Injuries. Yikes. Don’t know if I’ve got the complete list, but Osemele looked like that might be a season ender. When they pull a 300 pound lineman off the field on a John Deere, that’s never a good thing. Watkins pulled up lame on a non-contact play. Hamstring could be four weeks or more. Hitchens looks like he may have broken his hand. Schwartz was taping up an ankle but played on it. Raiders put a late hit on Mahomes that wasn’t called (big surprise with today’s crew) but luckily he wasn’t injured. As of this writing I haven’t seen the entire triage list, but there may be more.

2. Chuckie out coached us, and well, every dog has his day. Raiders made better second half adjustments, only giving up eight points where KC gave up twice that. KC had 94 penalty yards, not quite twice what the Raiders had; and if you have that many penalties you’re probably not going to win, even against the Raiders. That needs to be cleaned up, along with the other deficiencies from today.

1. Well Shit. Did I say that already? So we slip to 4-1, and even with the Raiders winning they’re now 3-2 and a game back. All time series is now KC 67, Raiders 54, two ties. Raiders get a bye next week while we have to go to Buffalo and play a weird Monday Afternoon game. At least we’ll get three extra days to prepare and heal up compared to if we would have had to play Thursday night. Raiders first game after the bye is Tampa Bay, which will give Chuckie a chance to stick it to his old team. The AFC West is now back in play, between us and Chuckie. We’ll see him again on JFK Day in Vegas. Hopefully we’ll be able to figure out how to get a pass rush on Carr between now and then.

OL is trash. Has been for 3 of 5 games so far. CEH is useless with them and Mahomes is constantly dodging DL.

This is it. This is why we lost.

The Supreme Court Chief Justice of Chiefsplanet has ruled, and Andy Reid's playcalling is exonerated.

Steve Spagnuolo's defense is found guilty of five counts of getting it's ass roasted.

And we will NOT allow this court to be packed with playcalling liberals.

Because of the Covid, they moved the game to Monday and it starts at 4pm KC time. That's what I heard.

I'm caught up now lol. Watched today's atrocity at Nzoner's and just got home a little bit ago. I do want to add that you always seem to be at your best when the Chiefs are at their worst. Thanks G!

Sure would be nice to have Niang about now. Hard to see his OL not being a problem going forward. The lack of pass rush is inexcusable. Andy was definitely out coached today. Very few adjustments I saw from them until the game was all but decided.

10) This better be
9) A hard slap to the face
8) Of the entire team to
7) Get it's shit together
6) Or it's going to be a long
5) Ass season of struggles
4) And call backs to the 2018 defense
3) With PMII having to carry
2) The entire franchise into the
1) Post season and possibly a first round loss
