If you have the time and patience, a good BS detector, and live in a populated enough area, Craigslist. Fayetteville's CL looks active enough to me.
If you have the time and patience, and a good BS detector, Ebay. If you have the time and patience, surf slickdeals.com forums. http://slickdeals.net/deals/computers/ or http://slickdeals.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9 If you have $500+ dollars, surf slickdeals or newegg and grab the best available today. If ALL it needs to do is run quickbooks, any laptop can do that. Given the infinite models/specs of laptops, it can be hard to say what any given one is worth. Since, any pc can run just quickbooks, going "used" will get you what you want for bottom dollar. What I'd do if I found a model I was interested in that's a few years old, is search google and ebay for what their going rate, and if they have any known serious flaws, " 'model' problem(s)/issues" And if it doesn't need to be portable, don't dismiss desktops. |

Drop a PM to Midnight Douchebag. Maybe he'll go by a lunchtime cafe and rip one off for you!

seeing as how this will be running the lifeblood of your wife's store, I wouldn't risk a used machine. Go buy a $400 laptop at any of the major retailers or from Dell Outlet.
At that price point, they are all about the same.

And we have macs for all the design work, but QB and Mac don't play well. Could run windows QB with boot camp, but I think just getting a separate laptop will be easier and more convenient for me (who will probably be entering a lot of the bullshit).

I bought a $400 Toshiba satellite from best Buy last christmas. Still working perfectly fine and fast enough for all the GFs stuff including playing Sims 3 and LFD2. Came with a mid end dual core and a decent enough graphics card and win 7.

I was going to suggest running Windows with VMWare Fusion or Virtual Box, but that might be overnerding it.

I agree with other who have suggested a $350-$400 laptop. I've always had great luck just watching Office Depot and Staples. Look for a HP or Toshiba in your price range. If you are patient you will find a machine that was selling for $600-$700 for $400. My buddy picked up an awesome 17" HP that was just loaded for $450 a few weeks back. Very nice machine. I've had a few HP DV series laptops now (currently use a DV6) and they have been rock solid. My son is still using the one I originally bought 6 years ago, and drags it back and forth to school (love the BYOT policy his school has!).
This is the one my buddy bought: http://www.staples.com/HP-Pavilion-g...product_985047 $450 after rebate but it's well worth the extra $50 will the upgraded memory, hard drive, and processor you get over the usual offerings around $400. Also has built-in bluetooth, which I think is a must for a laptop (no dongles for things like mice and easy file transfer from your phone or tablet). The screen is also beautiful on it. The 17" screen works well for a desktop replacement, which sounds like what you are looking for. DT |
