Bush avoids jet crash

Former President Bush Was to Board Downed Jet
Monday, November 22, 2004

HOUSTON — A private jet that was en route to Houston to pick up former President Bush (search) clipped a light pole and crashed Monday as it approached Hobby Airport in thick fog, killing all three people aboard.

The Gulfstream G-1159A (search) jet, coming into Houston, went down about 6:15 a.m. in an undeveloped area 1½ miles south of the airport, officials said.

"The plane that unfortunately crashed was flying in from Dallas to pick former President Bush up, with myself as a travel aide and a Secret Service agent," said Tom Freschette, spokesman for the former President Bush in Houston.

Bush was going to give a lecture for the Quayaquil, Ecuador, Chamber of Commerce, Freschette said, adding, "It's very sad."

All three people aboard the private jet died when it crashed a minute away from landing.

"We have accounted for three fatalities. We're confident that's all we're going to find," said Jack Williams, a district chief with the Houston Fire Department.

The jet was approaching the runway when it clipped the light pole, losing part of a wing, authorities said.

Herwig said the flight originated from Dallas Love Field. The plane's registered owner is Jet Place Inc. of Tulsa, Okla., he said.

Robert Randall, operations manager with Jet Place, said the plane had two pilots and a flight attendant aboard and was en route to Houston to pick up passengers. He did not identify the crew members or the passengers they were planning to pick up.

The company has a fleet of 18 jets and employs about 150 people, he said.

Flight operations at Hobby were not affected by the crash, Herwig said. A portion of the heavily traveled Beltway 8 tollway near the crash site was closed.

Part of the jet's wing was near the base of one of the light poles, and the wreckage extended about 100 yards from there, Williams said.

There was no rain but dense fog blanketed most of the area, officials said.

We've had shitty weather down here all week. Lots of t-storms and of course, fog. I like rainy weather and all, but this is getting to be a bit much.

Thankfully the former President was not on board when the plane went down.
